How did you get started in design?

My journey in design started when I was 8 years old. I remember myself with a drawing-pad and a pencil drawing on a plane. A fellow traveler looked at me, then advised my mother to teach me to paint. My mother was surprised because she was a programmer, my step-father was a physicist, and both my grandfathers were army officers.

Nobody expected me to have a talent in art.

My mother asked the traveler why she thought I should paint. Her answer was, “I have told you. It’s your choice to get it or not.” My mother got it.

I graduated from high school in arts for gifted children, then graduated from Kiev Academy of Arts University where I studied graphics and the basics of packaging design and outdoor ads.

I had little opportunity to improve my computer skills in my country because no University had the money to buy expensive computer equipment. But I have made the most of my opportunities to train myself and improve my graphic design skills which I have enjoyed for 10 years.

What do you love most about being a designer?

What I enjoy about being a designer is the the joy of creating. Design is a universe of it’s own and I am proud to be a part of it.

What are other things you enjoy outside of design?

I enjoy mountain skiing, biking, snowboarding and traveling. Of course, I love spending time with my husband and two sons.

How did you get started in design?

Like most little girls who draw, it started with mermaids and princesses. A subscription to Elle when I was 9 solidified my love for fashion. I was only interested in drawing women, so I went on to study fashion design in New York.

During this time, I was a bartender in the city for 10 years and I did a lot of painting. My inspiration shifted from the fantasy of fashion, to the real people I served drinks to. Satirical paintings of party people became my focus. I used to do these wild, child-like bar scene paintings that were more like big, sloppy illustrations on wood or whatever cool materials I found on the street. I would then show and sell them in bars and clubs.

Now that I’m a married mommy, I feed the creative beast with 99designs contests. I started playing with illustrator a few years ago, so 99designs was the perfect outlet to try my new skills and to be schooled by a ton of amazing designers.

What do you love most about being a designer?

I love diving into a project and losing track of time. I love the brain exercise. I love that I can be a full time mom while I do it. I love that I can be a part of a design community right here, from home in my jammies.

There is something wonderful about sending one of my little creations off into the world to do whatever it does. Connecting to people in a playful way or sparking inspiration for someone through my art is endlessly fun and very rewarding.

What are other things you enjoy outside of design?

Mostly, I am enjoying my young daughter. I keep myself healthy through random cult like obsessions like yoga and nutrition. The bar/restaurant scene is still a hobby, even though I don’t bartend anymore.

Much of my earlier work was inspired by musicians I met during my night life years. My husband is one of them, so we enjoy living on the off hours while the 9 to 5ers maintain the grind.

How did you get started in design?

I started studying graphic design in college, but sometimes I feel I really began designing at a very young age while sketching with crayons. I went from manual drawing using crayons and pencils to digital drawing using Corel draw and photo editing in Photoshop. I also learned 3d modeling, but feel that it is not my true passion.

Although I am a multimedia designer right now, graphic design is still my highest priority.

What do you love most about being a designer?

What I love most about being a designer is that I can make this world more beautiful 🙂

What are other things you enjoy outside of design?

I’m a mom and I love cooking because it’s similar to designing – we only need to know the basic skills to get started and your creativity will make you stand out. Add in knowledge and good instincts, and your creations will become amazing!

We can make people happy… so it is fun and I can spend my holidays in my home kitchen. My second hobby is photography, but I am not a professional. My long-term goal is to become an entrepreneur.
