Business & Consulting
I have been a licensed wine importer for 22 years, importing wine primarily from Australia and New Zealand. I no longer import, but help others through portfolio management, consulting, seminars, customs clearance, label approval, etc. I also teach a class on Australian Wine at San Diego State and have an award winning book out entitled How to Import Wine. My new book is currently titled "Exporting Wine to the U.S. - Strategies for Success". It is aimed at entities (wineries, brand owners, suppliers) and individuals outside the U.S. who wish to find a point of entry to US wine distribution - how to position your wine to attract US interest, finding the right importer, what is entailed in distribution, how to support these efforts, behind the scenes, etc. I am often emailed with questions from foreign wineries or I see their questions on LinkedIn and it is clear that misconceptions abound. I hope to make this a much clearer process for them, just as I'm told my book on wine importing has done for many new importers. My first book is in use at several universities. I hope that my second will also be a useful resource for college wine programs.
What's your vision?
A clean, striking book cover. I contributed the photo for the book cover for my first book. The publisher wanted a sterile container ship going under the Golden Gate bridge on a bland cover. I like the cover I ended up with, but want something totally different from the first book, because I think it is important to think outside the box again, and to differentiate my self-published book from the book I had with a traditional wine book publisher. I still love lots of clean space. I love a wine book that has just one grape on the cover, e.g.. But now that's been done. And NO wine glasses or wine being poured into a glass. They're everywhere! But I'm also open to other options and ideas beyond my own suggestions. Hope that helps.
The files I've included are not meant to be an exact direction, but a sense of what appeals to me, or in the case of the row of bottles it illustrates an example of success through distribution. The last one is my own book cover (How to Import Wine) as an example of a cover that I still think is eye-catching on the shelf. I'd really like back and front cover integration, because this will be in print as well. I'd like a design that works for both soft cover and ebook. Hope that's not too tall an order.
