Spectrum (Book One): The Dark Clad
Michael Calva is a first-time novelist and a first-time dad. Although this is his first novel, he has written many short stories, some of which earned him scholarships and awards during his academic years. Michael lives in Pittsburgh, PA with his wife and daughter—plus their two (very lazy) cats.
In a world broken by war, rebuilt on greed, and complicated by those born with an innate power called understrength, Laithic Hughes sets out to challenge the man who took everything from him. After barely surviving his trek into the Kreventia desert, Laithic relies on the assistance of a stranger known only to him as The Shambler. Now armed with a powerful technology, Laithic sets out to finally confront his adversary. When a deposed queen and her sole remaining loyal knight barely escape her kingdom with their lives, they encounter Laithic and, together, begin a journey that will spell salvation for none and death for many.
Men and women aged 18-29 primarily. Geared toward fans of fantasy and science fiction, fans of pulp fiction (I tend to write in a fast-paced style versus the stereotypical “flowery” description language of a fantasy writer)
I’m a big fan of the standard sci-fi or fantasy fare—bold, colorful designs that display an event in the story or a grouping of characters. However, I also deeply appreciate a simpler cover that highlights and maybe one key element of the story. In regards to the world, think standard sword and shield medieval/fantasy setting with a lot of wetlands and desert. Buildings are either castle-like or wood, and also the world is quite irradiated and dug up in many places (think large hand dug mines). What may help is some of the themes that are prevalent throughout the story as well as some of the key elements. Themes: revenge, breakdown of technology, unquenchable hunger for power, greed, senseless murder and violence, fire, poverty, magic (understrength) Key elements: endums (which are like diamonds—an energy source), guns/projectile weapons, steampunk-esque machinery and robots, swords/knights, metals (palladium/gold/silver) I’ve also included a sample cover that I put together to highlight the sort of colors I like. However, I’m open to anything. Also I do not want the tagline included, that was just for visual effect.
What to avoid
I prefer darker colors: black, deep reds, blues—but I’m open to anything, really!
