Dark Fantasy Book Series Titel: Unstern Subtitle: Die Chroniken von Alat Author: Katrin Ils
What's your vision?
I need a book cover (both ebook and print) for a dark fantasy series, Unstern (which can be translated as unlucky/cursed/bad luck). It's the first part (from 6 planned) and I would love to work with the same designer on all 6 book covers. As the page count of the book is still changing, just focus on the ebook but make sure your design can be transferred to print. Since it's a series the cover needs something (image/style) that can be used to tie all the books together. Please don’t use symbols. I love covers like the Hunger Games but it doesn’t work for this series and will come back to haunt us by book 3. Please note that the series is - NOT epic fantasy. It's NOT about the end of the world and the one true hero. - NONE of my characters are white and the setting is NOT "medival european". (So no Lord of the Rings/Game of Thrones. Instead think “medival” arabian/mediterranian countries. THIS HAS CAUSED SOME CONFUSION: Please, I don't need are typical arabic city or covered faces/hair. I don't want people thinking they'll read something set in a “medieval Arabian” setting or something like "arabian nights", because they won't. As long as people don't look at the cover and think: Great, more LOTR fantasy, I'm happy.) So please no snow, wolfes, swords, crowns, thrones etc. - NO lovestory (so no romantasy in any way, shape or form) - My target audience are readers of books like Six Of Crows, A Darker Shade of Magic or The Throne of Glass. The cover should speak to them. The plot: The friend of my heroine gets arrested and she tries to break him out before he get's executed, (he's guilty) while trying to keep the local gangsters and soldiers with a personal vendetta against her off her back. My heroine has yellow eyes, black curls and a tattoo (images attached) if you want to use that. She can't do magic (so please don't turn her into a witch :) ) and is armed with two knifes (side and back - normal knives, no sickle knifes). She wears loose fitting pants and tunikas and is an adrenaline junkie who happily punches other people in the face because that's her way to working through her issues. If you want to use a female figure on the cover: Please dress her and put her in a dynamik or a fightin position, no weird sexual poses. The town where everything takes place is important in the series, or rather the magical town beneath the actual one. Nobody lives underground as the wild magic there can kill you quite messily. It is used to smuggle people and things in and out off the city though. The map is already done. Here is the link to give so you can have a look at it: https://annafrohmann.com/portfolio/map-of-alat-unstern/ Please be aware that you can't use it in the cover design without the permission from the designer. If you have a great idea that includes the map I will ask her (as I have to pay for the rights to use it for a cover). The town itself is famous for glass production and their brightly colored glass windows. Other symbol s that are in the story: bird scull (“gang sign” of the criminals), stars as they are seen as gods, the star tattoos people are wearing. I’m wary of the idea of using a scene from the book, because I’m looking for something that can be easily changed to fit the other books in the series. I have no clear cover idea in my head and I'm aware that this makes it a nightmare for any designer. I'm looking forward to seeing your ideas :) I attached a document with some of the symbols that are part of the series and book covers I like, that fit the genre/style the series is in. Please let me know when you need more information or something is unclear. English is not my first language but I'll do my best. I'm from Austria, so if you want to communicate in German, go ahead ;)
I really like the "Starstruck" font for the title, but again: if you have a different idea, go ahead. http://www.dafont.com/starstruck.font
