“Lucas Hale and the Scroll of Seven Seals” is the first book in a five book series—“The Lucas Hale Series”. The series is geared towards young adults ages 14 and older. It is a story of a sixteen-year-old boy who dies prematurely only to awaken as a demon. He is told that he is the Chosen One who must stop the Antichrist from finding the Scroll of Seven Seals and awakening Lucifer from his years of slumber. The series takes stories and premises from the Bible and turns them into modern day challenges that our hero, Lucas Hale, must conquer.
I have attached consolidated scenes from the novel to hopefully provide more detail than necessary to get the creative juices flowing. I would like the cover designed in both a paperback and ebook format that will capture a scene from the story.
Lucas Hale is in Hell on his quest for the Scroll of Seven Seals. In this story, Hell is more of a place that is not the typical fire and brimstone, but a watered down version of the world we live in today—only with misguided ethics and values. The sun is always setting casting a “fiery” glow onto the landscape. The sky and sun do not have to be present, I merely provided this so that you as the artist have a better understanding of the world.
Lucas will be standing at the edge of the River Styx in Hell. This is a river flowing with murky greyish disgusting water full of swimming souls, which are nearly translucent, veiny, and starved human beings. Imagine almost a Voldemort from Harry Potter feeling. They have the appearance of tentacles for legs (imagine two squid tentacles) that propel them through the water. Their eyes are hollowed out holes, their nose flat and nonexistent, their teeth razor sharp, and their hands almost curved to a point to rip apart their prey. These souls devour anything that enter the river. The river is approximately fifty yards across and rapidly flowing with these hungry souls. The river doesn’t really have a portion of land where you slowly wade in. I don’t want to say it is a drop-off, but it is level with the ground—more opportunity for people to fall in. Feel free to be creative with the ground Lucas is standing on. It can be rocks, grass, dirt or a combination of anything you can think of. The River Styx will be flowing through a dark forest with ominous black leaves so having a way for this to appear across the river would be fantastic.
Lucas will be standing at the edge of this river looking at the souls. He will have just attended a party so he is wearing a black tuxedo. I would like for the tuxedo jacket to be removed with him wearing just the vest and maybe his sleeves rolled up for flair. More on Lucas: He is a sixteen-year-old white male and was a running back for his football team in his human life. He is well built, but more of a lean and fit type of build. Definitely not bulky. He has black hair that is spiked up in a bed head style, and has a soft tan like someone would have in the heat of summer.
In the artwork scenes attached you will notice I added excerpts with Lucas’ special ring as well as the moment in his life where he dawned two shadows. Lucas wears a black ring that looks like granite on his right hand that becomes a weapon. He also always has two shadows present. I would like both of these details to appear minutely in the cover.
I would like for the cover to be from the perspective as if you were standing behind Lucas, watching him looking in the River Styx. I want it to have an ominous feel, but nothing that makes the cover feel like it is a horror story about Hell. I like the feel of “The House of Hades” novel written by Rick Riordan.
Stay away from cartoonish. If you are leaning on the side of realistic or cartoonish go towards the realistic side.
I provided a lot of detail, but I’m excited to see your creativity and your own spin on it. Feel free to improvise.
I would like the title to be displayed at the top and the author’s name, Bradley North, at the bottom. The title of every book in the series begins with “Lucas Hale and the…” so it would be great if their could be a distinction between the “Lucas Hale and” part as well as the “The Scroll of Seven Seals” part. I’m thinking a font similar to Rick Riordan novel I mentioned earlier, but this is open to interpretation. Please stay away from gold fonts.
The book will be available for both print paperback and ebook format.
