What's your vision?
This is a multicultural middle-grade novel about a twelve-year-old, half-Japanese, half-Caucasian violin prodigy. In 1959, after her mother dies, Ayumi leaves Japan and comes to live with an American father she’s never met. Instead of the loving family she’s dreamed of, she finds a stepmother and a half-sister who do not want her. The only person who befriends her is the Mexican maid's rebellious 14-year-old son. Nothing is more important to her than her violin. After her extraordinary musical talent is discovered, boys from school, who have been taunting her as being slant-eyed and an egghead, shatter her precious instrument. Desperate for another violin and unable to ask for one from her money-strapped father, she steals one from a music store... There is a happy ending. The important thing is to convey that Ayumi is leaving Japan behind and moving into her American world with her violin, but it is scary and overwhelming. I have one idea: A profile of a girl (Ayumi) standing holding a violin case. She looks overwhelmed. She's staring at the statue of Liberty. Behind her is the Golden Pavilion. It doesn't have to be exactly like this, but I'm trying to show that Japan is behind her and America is in front of her, but she's scared. I would like other ideas. I want to keep it simple for kids, something that will stand out in thumbnail photos on Amazon.
