IMPORTANT. PLEASE DON'T USE ANYTHING TO REPRESENT SUICIDE. FOR EXAMPLE NOOSES, ROPE, KNIVES OR WEAPONS.
I need a design for my book cover, front and back. I'm looking for something eye catching, but quite minimal.
I'm looking for something that will help the book stand out from the crowd.
What is the book? In one sentence, the book aims to educate men on how to deal with their emotions and unlock their full potential. With suicide being the biggest killer of men under the age of 50 right now, and after losing my Dad to suicide, this book will educate the reader to take control of their life and create freedom.
More about the book:
I lost my Dad to suicide in 2009. It was completely out of the blue, he had every reason on paper to not do what he did. I, and the people around me had no idea how to handle it. The stigma around suicide meant we didn’t really talk about it and my Dad’s death was seen as ‘out of the ordinary’. I fell into depression shortly after and like most men do distracted myself from dealing with it.
Did you know the biggest killer of men under the age of 50 right now is suicide? A man in the UK dies from suicide every 2 hours. The way men are currently dealing with their emotions isn’t working… its time to make change.
This book is my personal insight into how I dealt with my Dad’s suicide, alongside overcoming depression and suicidal thoughts myself. I’ve created freedom by working online for the past 6 years, and been on a personal development journey ever since I lost my Dad. This book gives an insight into why the suicide rate is so high for men right now, and what needs to change.
It’s built around 10 principles, 10 principles to completely transform the current way men deal with emotions and to help the reader take full control of their life.
The book starts with my Story, and the events of losing my Dad to suicide. It goes into my research and opinions on why the suicide rate is so high for men right now,
The 10 Principles
1. Self Awareness & Opening Up
2. Taking Responsibility
3. Why Are You Here? (Creating Purpose In Your Life)
4. Forgiveness & Letting Go Of The Past
5. Facing Fears
6. Investing In Yourself
7. Feed Your Mind Positivity
8. Transforming Your Relationships
9. Stop Competing
10. Achieving More & Creating Financial Freedom
The Title: MAN UP MAN DOWN
Why the title? There’s a firm saying between men when they’re feeling down. MAN UP! With the suicide rate so high, this approach of just dealing with your issues, showing strength and MANNING UP isn’t working.
Therefore MAN DOWN relates to being truly in tune with your thoughts, and dealing with your emotions the right way as a man. It ALSO relates to the suicide rate, and the amount of ‘men down’ there is through them taking their own lives.
I want the cover to really intrigue the reader, and also appeal to men.
Some possible directions:
1) The use of baby blue to represent men as baby boys. When we are born as a boy the key colour is baby blue, pink for girls. Utilising this within the book in a clever way could look great.
2) A contrast between the MAN UP part of the book and a MAN DOWN part of the book.
3) Something that uses pure typography (e.g. Everything is illuminated)
4) Something integrating a man, or something to stand out to men and make it relate to them
ALSO - The book will need my name on there somewhere: Paul McGregor
It will ALSO need a tag line in smaller font. Use one of the tag lines below…
1.Suicide Is The Biggest Killer of Men Under The Age of 50… But Why?
2. 10 Shifts To Help Any Man Create Emotional Freedom and Unlock Their Full Potential.
I've included the following:
1) Covers I like the design of.
But please don't feel you have to follow these styles - be as creative as you can! Colours, typography ideas and other ideas are included above. These are just covers that caught my eyes with a similar design to go for. I'm happy to send you a free copy of the ebook, or an extract, if you think it would help.
The Back Cover
Follow the same theme above using this text below as the main focus.
Did you know the biggest killer of men under the age of 50 right now is suicide? A man takes his own life every 2 hours in the UK alone. Back in 2009 at the age of 18 I suddenly lost my Dad to suicide. He was an amazing Father of two, a husband to his childhood sweetheart, well paid and well loved by friends, an avid runner who competed regularly and even had a phschology degree to falling into depression and shortly after taking his own life. Why did it happen? On paper, he had every reason not too.
With suicide and depression affecting so many men right now is it time we changed the way we deal with things? Is it time to truly Man Up, or is it time to Man Down before more of us in fact become... a Man Down.
This book dives into my personal story and highlights the 10 principles I used to help me overcome depression and suicidal thoughts. I reflect back on my Dad's suicide and combined with research highlight the key reasons behind why so many men are turning to suicide right now. ,
Then a quote below...
"Heartfelt, funny and most importantly life changing. Every man and in fact anyone affected by suicide and depression needs to read this" - Joseph Turvey
