What's your vision?
This is the cover design brief for the second novel in my "Ethereal Vision" series of books. The second novel is titled, "Rise," and is scheduled for release in August. The second book in the series continues the story of a group of teenagers with psychic powers. The title, "RISE", should be at the top in large letters, and underneath will be the subtitle "AN ETHEREAL VISION NOVEL" in much smaller lettering. The cover should feature two main things. The first, is a rose in full bloom, face-up (no stem), which should be directly under the subtitle in the center. The rose must have an extremely special appearance. In the novel, it represents the center of the universe / creation, so the image must be absolutely spectacular. In one word, it has to be ASTONISHING! The rose has crystalline and diamond elements in its structure, although it's appearance as an actual Rose in full bloom is still important. It's many petals will be encrusted everywhere with small diamonds. Light glints off the diamonds that encrust its surface. Traces of silver also run through it in a few places — like on the tips of some of the petals, or in the inside of some of the petals. This silver will have a glint to it, as if it is some kind of liquid / silver light. As the Rose is in full boom, the petals themselves should spread out wide. Some thin pools of light (like rings) spread out from the edges of the rose and appear around it also. There will also probably be some light beaming out from the rose. The primary color of the rose will be a light / middle shade of blue (not too deep). At the center of the rose, there is a red spot, or 'heart'. This is composed of a beautiful, bright red diamond, with an 'emerald' cut, lengthways from top to bottom (see images for 'emerald cut' type of diamond). While this is a beautiful aspect of the image, it should not be too big, taking up no more than 20% of the image, as the Rose itself is more important. The blue diamond / crystalline petals are the main, eye-catching aspect of this image. The second main thing in the image is the character Jane, the main protagonist of the series. She is underneath the Rose itself, taking up most of the cover. She is floating and glancing upward as she stares at the Rose in wonder and awe. Her left hand is reaching up to touch the edge/bottom of the Rose, and as it does, there is a glint of light at her fingertips where they touch the Rose. Some of the diamond / crystalline structure melds into her hand, so that this hand appears to be composed of diamond and silver, gleaming with light, until it reaches below the sleeve of her denim jacket. (Please note that as Jane is facing outward, her left hand appears on the right hand side of the design). Her long blonde hair should be flowing around behind her. She is wearing blue jeans, a light denim jacket and underneath it and a barely visible, thin white t-shirt. Preferably, the denim jacket is closed, with a few buttons open at the top where it splits, showing her neck. Here, we see that some of the crystalline form from the diamond has become part of her neck, just next to her shoulder, and a glint of light appears there to show this. She is well dressed, but not overly so. *Jane's clothing is open to interpretation / alternative ideas*. For instance, open denim jacket if you think it looks better, etc. Jane's full body pose on the cover should appear HEROIC and striking, but her face should be filled with wonder and awe. We might try to have some light coming out of her eyes too (though we'll see — this may not look good). Perhaps her right hand could be balled into a fist to demonstrate determination (but this may not look right either, so we'll see). As she is floating upward, her legs might be bent slightly at the knees (this would be a more dramatic pose) and her body might be tilted slightly to the side. I always thought of the actress Saoirse Ronan (with blonde hair) as inspiration for Jane, just to give some insight. Background: The images are set against a background of stars, as the Rose itself represents a cosmic object. So all around both Jane and the Rose, the background will be filled with stars. The color of the background is light blue. See attached images for examples of background. SUMMARY: At the top, underneath the title and subtitle, is a dazzling, crystalline/diamond, blue rose with a red, diamond emerald heart. It is a tremendously beautiful object that inspires awe. It is surrounded by some thin pools of light. Underneath the Rose, taking up the majority of the image, is Jane herself, the protagonist. She is floating upward (her full body visible), with her left hand (her left, not ours) reaching up toward the Rose, where the tips of her fingers touch its edges. Her other hand is down by her side. My name will appear at the bottom, "Liam Donnelly," in smaller lettering. I'll be releasing it everywhere: Amazon kindle, Createspace and smash words, so will need the full cover for all of those formats (will have the page count for the createspace version soon) . On the back cover for the createspace version, the stars can continue and spheres of light / flecks of diamond from the rose appear there, moving toward the edge of the cover, over the blanket of stars / space. A galaxy or two might look nice in the background here. The blurb will be centred on the back. Stock images are OK. I like original art too. Please feel free to use whatever works best for you as I like both. Thank you very much! I look forward to working with you =-)
Here are some images for ideas of the various objects on the cover. The diamond is an example of what the heart of the rose would look like. I've included some images of starry skies, to show a good example of the color I would like for the background with the stars. In the image of Andromeda, for example, the blue color that surrounds the center is a good indication. *The second image of stars, (73.7KB) is the closest look for the background that I want, except here and there a few stars should be brighter and more prominent.* I've also included a couple of Roses for demonstration purposes only just to give a very general idea. (they would probably be a lighter shade of blue than this). Please refer to the brief for exact description of this. The Rose is face up in full bloom! Thank you. :) The last sketch is a rough outline of the cover. Please consider it very rough, and feel free to try different sizes for the Rose, for Jane etc. Also, please feel free to experiment with the size / placing of the font. For instance, if you think "An Ethereal Vision Novel" would look better on the bottom, to leave room for the image, then go for it (you guys are the professionals ;) ). Thanks. I do not own the rights to any of these images, they are here for demonstration purposes only.
