Description: Title: Nixon and Dovey, The Legend Returns
Author: Jay W Curry
Nixon and Dovey is a historical fiction novel set in the American post colonial period (1800-1830). There are three sections:
1) The Boy which covers the hero Nixon who is a very talented youth particularly adept at sharp shooting with a long barrel musket and a jockey on a thoroughbred named Bold Spirit. Nick is over 6 feet tall, sandy Scot-Irish hair, light blue eyes, muscular physique, handsome. He is in all kinds of dress throughout the book from rags as a youth, top hat and suit at a ball, to traditional Indian-style buckskins. He befriends Cyrus, a young burly African slave with short nappy hair, flat nose, big gleaming smile dressed in early slave clothing (plain, muslin shirt and cotton pants with rope belt).
2) The Love section introduces Dovey a beautiful, aristocratic daughter of a wealthy and powerful senator. She has honey blond hair, peach completion, bright blues eyes, engaging smile, petite frame with unusually narrow waist. In this section Nixon meets and falls in love with Dovey and competes for the Governor’s Cup horse race.
3) The Crime covers Nixon’s murder of a rival, his court room trial, and acquittal. After marrying Dovey, Nixon is jailed for trumped up charges of stealing Cyrus and killing him. He is convicted and condemned to hang. Dovey assists Nixon in escaping. During the wedding scenes Dovey is given a small gold necklace of an angel with a small ruby in its center.
What I envision:
I am open to all suggestions. But for input I envision a cover with the three main characters: Nixon with long rifle, buckskins, powder pouch around his neck, Dovey in a high society, light colored dress and the gold angel with ruby around her neck, and Cyrus with his big smile, short black hair, plain muslin shirt, cotton pants and rope belt. Perhaps in the background a plantation house, a horse and/or a hangman’s noose. I know that is a little busy so just be creative and have fun!
I plan to use the cover for a print version of the book so I need both a front, spine, and back cover. For the back I could write a summary but I thought a few real quotes might emphasize that this is a real character and historical. Below are a couple quotes which could be used as back cover script.
At the bottom of the back cover I would like my picture with some BIO script as well. I will attach a picture. Please figure space for the website http://www.NixonandDovey.com, a QR symbol, and a barcode.
“Probably there has never been a more tragic foundation
for thrilling romance than the one laid by this episode …
where truth is stranger than fiction.”
Biographical Sketches of the Early Settlers
—Hopewell Section, 1897
“Curry was a professional gambler, horse jockey,
and ‘Big Ike’ at all the shooting matches, corn huskings,
vendues … he was a dashing fellow; wore store clothes;
oiled his hair; wore shiney boots with red tops; and was
a general beau, of course.”
The Landmark, Nov. 20, 1875
“… Nixon Curry, is six feet high, blue eyes, sandy hair,
will weigh upwards of two hundred pounds … He is a
gambler and drunkard, plays the fiddle, and is
fond of joking, and makes a great many shrewd
remarks—is good company, and a pretty smart man.”
