Entertainment & The Arts
We publish a small number of literary novels each year. Our readers are mostly female and college educated. They are avid readers who enjoy something a little out of the ordinary.
What's your vision?
We need a book cover designed for 'Jack Lives Here' a literary novel in the vein of the authors from the beat generation. It's an ode to Jack Kerouac and his famous book 'On the Road'. Jack Lives Here is a little bizzare, such as in the opening scene Lulu finds a hacienda in Mexico with a moose standing outside (yes, a moose) and when the moose charges her, it steps on a land mine and explodes. Not sure the exploding moose is an image that needs to be on the cover, but the book is a collage of contrasts... Moose in the Mexican desert. Belief versus Doubt. Dead versus Alive. I feel the cover has to conjure the Mexican colors... That faded, third world, pock marked version of the truth. The reality of all that wear and tear... because the book has a truth and honesty to it that transcends the bizarre situation. You can also get a sense for the literary nature of the novel from the blurb on the back: Somewhere a little North of February, 2001 and South of the border... Lulu is the loud mouthed, untamable daughter of a dead hippie. A girl burning with questions. When she suspects that an author writing under the name of James Carousel for the New Yorker is actually Jack Kerouac, who is not dead but alive and well and living in the fry pan heat of Baja Mexico, she tracks him down and convinces him to go on the road one last time in a bizarre and perilous journey to discover whether truth is as important as belief.
The book needs to appeal to the literary, largely female, reader who has read Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady, and probably a good number of the beat authors. The hypothesis that Jack Kerouac might not have died would be of interest to them... We have attached a zip file with some design references for covers we really like. A sort of hand drawn feel would be nice, incorporating the figure of a 21 year old girl, either in silhouette or illustration, or even an impressionistic approach. We're open to interpretation. ON THE COVER WE NEED... 1. the title: Jack Lives Here 2. the author: Lynnette Lounsbury 3. the slugline (smaller than title): Somewhere North of February, and South of the border... ON THE SPINE WE NEED... 1. Title 2. Author 3. Logo (graphic only) attached file. ON THE BACK WE NEED... 1. the blurb: (set apart somehow) Somewhere a little North of February, 2001 and South of the border... 2. the Logo (graphic & text) attached file. 3. the website (this could be written or done differently than it is currently on the logo to fit with the design of the book) www.themadones.com.au
