Cicatrice (New Eyes and Brave)
Jo is a new writer out of a small seaside town in Tasmania, Australia. Not far shy of fifty, she's discovered it's never too late to follow your dream.
Mel Lal is a 27 yo Indian born Australian woman who has been caught up in a man's twisted need for revenge. She's been alone and running for five years, until a chance encounter with her former best friend, Jamie Stevens, leads to an awareness that she is no longer content to run, no longer content to dwell in shadow nor live in fear.
Fiction, adult, women, LGBT.
Book cover type
At this stage, I'm looking at a trim of 5.25" x 8". Front cover, I see a 27 year old Archie Panjabi type, a survivor with a strength that leaps from her eyes. She's wearing a particular necklace of white gold. The pendant is made up of 3 interlocking rings (rose, gold and white). She has a scar that runs through her left brow onto her forehead, described in the book as 7cm long. I'd love on the back cover a picture of a photograph that is also significant in the book, but I don't know if I'm being too needy here. The photo as described is creased and worn out, so it wouldn't need to be particularly detailed, but it shows my two main characters sitting together on a green lawn. The woman on the right is the Archie Panjabi type (long dark hair and a fringe down to her brow) and the other woman is a 22 yo blonde (perhaps a Brit Marling type). The blonde is leaning against the raven, and they are looking to their right and grinning. If this is all too much, perhaps there could be a zoom-in of the pendant. But Jamie (the blonde) needs to have a presence there. Perhaps something as simple as a pale hand reaching from above for a brown-skinned one, through a watery film? Water becomes significant at the end. Perhaps a discrete helicopter silhouette somewhere. I chose the colour red for Mel's fire, and blue for the calm that Jamie brings. Font - not sure. Wow me. ;-)
What to avoid
The story is predominantly about the relationship between two women, but it has dark subject matter; cruelty, and courage in the face of it. Just something to keep in mind.
