Entertainment & The Arts
This is a light science fiction, young adult novel, titled Eli Kid and the Dark Alchemist. Its target audience is high school males, but the quirky humor makes it accessible to an older demographic as well.
What's your vision?
I am looking for suitable cover art for a young adult novel that I will be publishing. The protagonist of the novel is a fifteen-year-old high school freshman, Eli Kid. I would like Eli to be the focus of the cover, preferably standing at a slight angle and looking forward at the viewer. He is slender, with dark, brown hair--almost black--combed over to the side with his hand. His bangs are slightly long, falling over his eye when allowed. The three most prominent characteristics of Eli are his eyes, pants, and jacket. His right eye is a pale green, while his left eye is a bright silver. He dresses nicely and always wears suspenders (suit-style suspenders, not hillbilly-style). He also always wears a long black jacket that falls somewhere around his knees. Feel free to experiment with the exact style, but just keep in mind that he is a well-dressed, good-looking kid. As for the background, anything is fine. Two major settings in the story include: the high school of Tapwater, Mississippi, which is a three-storied, domed building that used to be the town's courthouse; and an abandoned, fenced-in power plant on a hill. Major characters include: Cameron, a short, slender girl, with gray eyes, short, light brown hair with longer bangs, and a pretty radical fashion; Sam, a short, skinny kid with slicked-back, red hair, green eyes and freckles; and a group of creatures called Doanis, which look a lot like humans, but they have gray skin, yellowish eyes, sharp teeth, tattooed faces, and wear hooded clothing of thick cloth and patched leather which pretty thoroughly obscure their features. There is also a creature called a skora that might look good on the back cover; it looks like a black-scaled hyena, with a couple dozen stinger-tipped tentacles protruding from its back, and it is about the size of a small car. Two major elements of the story, which you might think of including, are the Port and the poster. The Port is a blue, shimmering portal to another world, which floats in the air and is about the size of a beach ball; the poster is a call-to-arms by a resistance group that reads: Freedom over Oppression Truth above Corruption Where is Eli Kid? Those are all just suggestions that you are free to choose from or not. As long as Eli remains the focus and the book title (Eli Kid and the Dark Alchemist) and my name (Michael Hahn) are included, feel free to include what you want. Probably the less busy the better, though. Style-wise, I am also pretty open. Comic books and superheroes are mentioned quite a bit in the book, so perhaps a comic book style would suit best. This book will be published both electronically and in print, so I will need a front cover, side, and back. The format is in 6 x 9 in., and the length is 468 pages. Here is a quick synopsis of the story as a whole: When 15-year-old Eli Kid moves to live with his aunt in the ordinary, small town of Tapwater, Mississippi, he expects to live an ordinary, small town life. Ordinary lives are hard to come by, however, when the small town you move to turns out to be not so ordinary at all. They are even harder to come by when you happen to be the most famous INDO in the Multiverse, even when most of that Multiverse believes you are dead. And when a local girl disappears, all hope Eli has for an ordinary life disappears along with her. With his friends, Sam--the inhaler-wielding, comic-reading, brittle-boned outcast--and Cameron--the Polaroid-snapping, arm-punching, haiku-reciting actress--Eli is forced to deal with everything from grubby, World-hopping Transients to stranded, blood-eating Doanis; unstable Ports to inter-dimensional crime lords; mad alchemists to debt-ridden, Kadorvian superstars. And, of course, the most terrifying challenge of all: high school.
