The Servant Girl's Secret
Before becoming an author, Annmarie Banks was a professional bookseller. The rare books and antiquarian manuscripts that she traded sparked a fascination with the brave men and women of yore who defined the constraints of the powerful leaders of their time to acquire knowledge wherever they could find it.
A scholar lies dying in a spice merchant’s stable when Nadira receives his last words. To Nadira, words are her life: sold into slavery as a girl, her unusual gift of language keep her employed as her master's scribe. Suddenly, the words that have long been her solace have put her in mortal danger. Nadira is now one of the few who can unlock the secrets within the pages of the Hermetica, an ancient text that promises its readers the powers of the magi of ancient Babylon. Soon she is the unwilling companion to an English baron and his troupe of warriors as they traverse Europe in search of the manuscript. As Nadira begins her transformation from servant to sorceress, will she escape the fires of the Inquisition, the clutches of the Borgia pope, and the ambitions of a French king?
Skew female, mid thirties to mid forties. There is a strong female protagonist in this story.
This is a book that is part of a three part series, so it would be good to have something that could be "repeatable" with some changes in color, etc. It is definitely a fantasy/metaphysical novel, with reference to ancient texts that reveal the secret to immortality and with the main protagonist, Nadira able to read minds and travel to the afterlife. However, it is set in 15th century Europe (Spain, then on to Rome and then Turkey/Greece in later books) and the book alludes to real events such as the Spanish Inquisition, the fall of Constantinople, etc. So a cover that can strike the right balance between metaphysical fantasy and medieval history would be great! The author is not well known, so would not give the author name large real estate on the page. Would value a design that stands out in miniature when viewed in the Kindle Store. Have included a snapshot of already existing covers that I like as an attachment.
What to avoid
This book takes place in Continental Europe, so anything too "English" "Regency" or "Tudor" in style wouldn't be appropriate.

And then… they selected a winner!
This was the second brief Julia worked on for me. She showed great insight into the design, even going so far as to put her own interpretation on the characters and was open to my ideas and feedback. I hope to work together again soon.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
