eBook cover for Fiction Novel. This book is about a man who returns to his home town of Ashtabula, Ohio upon the death of his estranged/elderly father. While there tying up loose ends he thinks back to the traumatic event that led to him and his mother to leaving his father and the town back in the 1930s. The book goes between the present tense late 1960s/early 1970s to the past tense mid 1930s Depression era. This traumatic event was the violent murder of our narrator’s beloved sister by his cousin who had been invited to stay with the family by the father. The family was against the cousin coming but the father made the decision to take the cousin in after his sister (the boy’s mother) pleaded with him to do so. The young man had gotten into trouble at school for sexually assaulting another class mate but thinking the boy was innocent the father kept this information to himself and welcomed him into the home. The ultimate murder of the sister severed the relationship between the mother and son from the father especially after they learned that the father had known the boy had a record and was exhibiting strange behavior. The son, the narrative voice throughout the story knew all along that his cousin was mentally off however at the end it is revealed that it was the son who accidentally murdered his sister upon discovering her having sex with the cousin. Our narrator was so enraged and confused he smashed her skull with a rock when meaning to kill the cousin who he expected to find assaulting his sister…not expecting to find her as a willing lover . Ultimately the cousin takes the fall and is killed on the run and no one ever suspects any other way the murder went down. The narrative voice is reminiscent, suspenseful, witty and cynical. There are moments when the glib responses of the narrator are down right funny in how flip they are. Our narrator is a somewhat jaded man who’s life was fractured because of this traumatic childhood event. A person of above average intelligence. A newspaper man of many years, a string of divorces and failures in life hard memories of his experiences in WWII A man who no longer drinks because of a past alcohol problem. Upon returning home after decades away and reflection and recognition of how events really went down our narrator goes back to his life in Chicago a little better off and more optimistic about the future as though he’s come to terms with his role in the past.
This is a murder mystery of sorts but one that is introspective (i.e. not action driven as in the more popular style now) and slow to unfold as the suspenseful part of this book does not really kick in until the last half. One of the main characters in this story is the town itself - Ashtabula, a depression era small town on Lake Erie in Ohio. The Depression and post WWII politics and turmoil are also ever present. The novel was written by my Grandfather a lifelong newspaper man who himself was very witty and an amazing storyteller. This novel hearkens back to another time of martini lunches and chain smoking in the newsroom or anywhere for that matter. Robert Frost and JD Salinger were great influences of my grandfather and although this book is not written in either of those voices a bit of those writers influences do come thru. My Grandfather did try to publish this novel once the story goes however he was rejected (by John Grisham's publisher allegedly) and never tried to have it published again. This novel was found in his basement 2 years ago after his death. A name for this novel has not been selected yet however for design purposes use ... Return to Ashtabula
