The ideal response from the target audience to the cover will be that of identification with the characters in the book and the issues they’re facing.
We’ll ultimately want 4 covers with the same basic design, but different cover illustrations, and perhaps colors. We’re thinking a clean look, not too busy, and not too young.
The four titles are The Best of Friends, With Friends Like These, A Friend in Need, and More Than a Friend.
The storyline follows a very ordinary 17-year-old boy, who lives in a small town, through his final year of high school. Along the way, he discovers what friendship is, dates his first girlfriend, decides God is real, and decides who and what he wants to be. He also deals with some serious situations including a cave-in where he and his friends could have died, his best friend’s becoming a paraplegic in a car accident, a breakup with his girl, delivering a baby, and so forth. The overall vibe is positive.
The mood is kind of Gordon Korman meets Melody Carlson. There’s humor, but the books feel real, and there’s a low-key, but definite, Christian component. We want the cover to show readers that the books aren’t dark and heavy, but rather that the author is able to handle the issues that young adults face as they come of age emotionally, socially, intellectually and sexually, as well as spiritually, with insight and humor.
Formats needed: Trade paperback (5 ½ x 8 inch) and epub (600 px x 800 px) covers needed. We’d also like an image in high enough res to use on a poster.
