I need an imaginative book cover for my book, Midnight at the Shelter
Tick, Tick, Tick...it's just an Old Wooden Clock on the
Wall. The cats and dogs of Hope Animal Shelter know that when the Old
Wooden Clock on the Wall chimes twelve, tomorrow becomes today and
today means someone will be going to their Forever Home. Marlowe, the
Red Pit Bull Pup is just one of the many animals who call this special
place home. He is desperate to find his Forever
Home but he believes that he never will. This is his story of how he
comes to find what he
has always dreamed of, his Forever Home.
TITLE: Midnight at the Shelter of Hope (In bold Gabriola font
positioned at the top of the book). I am flexible about the position
of the title and font size.
AUTHOR: Teresa Campbell (In bold Gabriola font positioned at the
bottom of the book). I am flexible about the position of the
author’s name and font size.
DESIGN CONCEPT: Includes realistic animals / one old woman and one
child. No cartoons. I would like to see both color and black and
white submissions, if possible. I’m not sure which would work best.
• It is midnight at Hope Animal Shelter. There is a door and one
large window to the right of the door. The window is covered with
blinds or curtains and light is shining in from an outside street
lamp (not too much light, this is a dimly lit room). There is an Old
Wooden Clock (see photo) hung over the top of the door. It is brown
in color, octagonal in shape with a white face, black numbers and a
brass pendulum that swings below. The hands of the clock are set to
• There is a multitude of cats and dogs sitting in the middle of
the room staring intently at the Old Wooden Clock (they believe that
the Old Wooden Clock is magic). There are about 25 cats (some kittens
included) of different sizes and colors and 10 dogs (some puppies
included) of different sizes and colors. The dogs are mostly mutts
and the cats are cats (sorry, but I’m not a cat person). It doesn't
have to be the exact number, but it should look like there are a lot
of cats and dogs (but not too crowded). If all of the cats and dogs
can’t fit on the front cover, it’s OK to have some of them fade
into the darkness of the room.
• Positioned in the center of the cats and dogs is a big cat named
Prince Homer, sitting on top a scratching post (scratching post is
about 2 feet tall), and he is also staring at the Old Wooden Clock.
The cat has a disheveled gray coat and a majestic stature (he rules
Sitting to the right of the scratching post is a boxer mix dog (50
lb., 22-24 inches tall, reddish brown in color). Sitting to the left
of the scratching post is an orange tabby cat and a reddish brown pit
bull dog (50 lbs., 22-24 inches tall, with floppy ears and a white
tip on his tail (he is the main character). He isn't stocky like some
pit bulls; he has a long body (see photos).
• Place an old woman off in the background. She has long gray hair,
bright green eyes and is wearing a blue robe. She steadies herself
with a gnarled wooden cane.
• The view is from behind the cats and dogs looking toward the Old
• The room has tiled floor, see photo of floor and kennels. Try to
make it look not so cluttered (lose the cleaning supplies, sheet
hanging over the fence and the human in the kennel). Put in several
chain link kennels with the doors slightly open, on both sides of the
door if possible. A tan and white cat is balancing on one of the
kennel doors (also looking at the Old Wooden Clock).
• There is small thin Caucasian boy, with dark hair, tattered
clothing, barefoot and he is sitting on top of a grizzly bear. His
tiny hands are in front of him clutching the fur. The bear is a
California Grizzly with a golden brown coat (the now extinct Golden
Bear). The red pit bull and a Kit Fox (see photos) are sitting beside
the bear. The Kit Fox is smaller (see description below) so put him
in front of the pit bull. They are on a hill gazing down on a farm
illuminated by the light of a full moon. Also visible on the farm is
an old farm tractor (see photo), rickety hay wagon and a wood pile.
Several rundown, weathered wooden buildings are on fire and the
flames are leaping high into the night.
• Behind them is a darkened forest of oak trees (This is the
Forbidden Land so it needs to look frightening).
• Kit foxes are small creatures, usually about 17 inches tall,
weighing approximately 5 lbs. They have a bushy tail which is about
10 inches long. The coat is rustic gray and black (see photo).
IMPRINTED OVER OR BENEATH THE BACK COVER IMAGE:
• Marlowe, the Red Pit Bull Pup believes that he is a coward. He
also believes that is why he will never find his Forever Home. But
when a mysterious old woman suddenly appears at Hope Animal Shelter
and magically transports him to the Great Forest, Marlowe must find
the courage to confront his darkest fear. He is sent on a quest to
rescue a Human Cub held captive in a fortress deep in the Forbidden
Land. Together with his friends, Samson, the Golden Bear and Vulpé,
the Kit Fox, they must stand against evil and bring the Cub safely
