The Secret Diaries of Juan Luis Vives
Tim Darcy Ellis
Tim Darcy Ellis (BA, BSc, MHSc, MAPA) is an author, physiotherapist, business owner and, formerly, a professional archaeologist. He is the founder and director of Excel Physiotherapy and Wellness, established in Sydney, Australia, in 2013, as well as the Chief Writer of Excel Life magazine. As an archaeologist, Tim worked with both the Museum of London and the British Museum. He worked extensively on sites throughout England, including the excavations of London's Roman Amphitheatre beneath the Guildhall Art Gallery. It was during this period that he developed a lifelong fascination with England's immigrant communities—their struggles, conflicts, failures and, ultimately, their successes. Writing The Secret Diaries of Juan Luis Vives reunited Tim with his passion for European history, archaeology and philosophy. In particular, he was able to explore his interest in the small Spanish and Portuguese Jewish communities of Tudor and Stuart London. In the framing of the novel an electrician finds the lost secret diaries of a famous renaissance humanist and philosopher, Juan Luis Gives. The action starts in 1522, in the Spanish Netherlands. Vives poses as a Catholic to avoid the fires of the Inquisition. As forces close in around him, England's Thomas More offers him the role of tutor to Mary, daughter of Catherine of Aragon. Catherine is Henry VIII's first wife, whom he now wants to divorce. Once inside the Tudor court, Henry and Catherine separately seek Vives' assistance to support their opposed demands. He must betray one, to help the other: knowing his decision could cost him his life. All the while, he is torn between two very different women. Vives is a hot-blooded Spaniard writes with intense passion through his secret diary, discovered five centuries later. As the story reaches its dramatic and fateful climax, not only his survival but that of his family and people hangs in the balance. 'Beautiful metaphors and tactile, evocative descriptions bring sixteenth-century England and Spain to life.' Foreword Reviews 'Ellis tackles all of this with magnificent gusto... a fast-paced and richly engaging story.' Kirkus starred review

Book cover type
Please see file below for images I have purchased. Also three book covers that I find appealing. Many historical novels of this espied include some sort of embellishment wiht filigree, usually in gold, that eludes to the themes of the book. The Menorah, or star of David (files below for example), subtly used can communicate that there are Jewish them to this novel, and can be subtly used.
