Setting: The 20th floor of an exclusive residence for seniors that has stores on the main level – in present-day Toronto, Ontario, Canada. All the residents have connections to the arts (writing, art, music, etc.) The murder takes place in a lounge where there are recliners and tables.
Storyline: An elderly woman is found sitting as if asleep, slumped over, her knitting fallen over her knees. She has been stabbed in the left side of her neck with a knife that was a memento from a visit to Japan. The knife is on the floor.
Police detectives Paul Manziuk and Jacquie Ryan lead the investigation, which winds down many paths, including one that takes them back to a suicide in 1952.

This woman is central to the story. She is the “butterfly” who casts a shadow.
The actual butterfly image used in the book is a necklace along the lines of the ones I posted below (bright but no colour specified).
