The Last Words, The Farewell Addresses of Union and Confederate Commanders to Their Men at the End of the War Between the States
Michael R. Bradley
Michael R. Bradley is a nationally known historian and author of several books on the War Between the States and particularly Lt. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest.
Dr. Michael R. Bradley's research and writing are extraordinary. He has drawn wide praise over the years as an historian. The Last Words is a masterful bit of original research where he dug out all the extant farewell addresses he could find of Union and Confederate commanders. Lee had surrendered but units were still in the field and had not yet broken up and gone home. Not all commanders gave farewell addresses but Bradley found 17 who did, nine Union, and eight Confederate. These are the last words commanders would say to the men they had led for years through bloody hell, death, grief, enormous privations, victories and defeats.
EVERYBODY interested in history and good stories that are true, men, women, South, North, across the country and world. There is a good market in Europe and across the English speaking world for good history books on the American War Between the States.
Book cover type
This is a simple assignment. I want a classic design with elegant but strong typography. I like borders similar to the example I have provided entitled Slavery Was Not the Cause of the War Between the States, The Irrefutable Argument., or even more decorative. The sample below entitled From Bull Run to Appomattox has corner elements that might be good instead of continuous borders. The title page I have included suggests a way the front cover might be arranged BUT try anything you want. I want the front cover to be STRIKING. The background, or the background of the bottom part of the front cover could include a bloody battle scene OR a quiet cemetery with rows of flags on graves OR freshly dug graves. Any battle scene with flags MUST have the Confederate battle flag AND the American flag since the addresses are half Southern and half Northern. --- The War Between the States (a/k/a Civil War) was the bloodiest war in American history. Over 800,000 soldiers were killed and over a million maimed out of a national population of 31 million. We lost 400,000 in all of World War II out of a national population of 150 million. The farewell addresses are important documents and The Last Words includes the 17 extant addresses, a picture of the commander speaking, and vivid historical detail of the battles the units were in. --- I need the front cover, the spine, and just the frame/border/background for the back cover. I want to be able to add text myself to the back cover in Photoshop. --- EVERYTHING SHOULD BE ARRANGED TO FIT AMAZON'S TEMPLATE FOR A 5-1/2 BY 8-1/2'' BOOK WITH 290 PAGES ON CREAM PAPER. --- There are a lot of photographs and art work from the War Between the States in the public domain. There are old black and white photos of war dead and cannons, warships, armies, flags, and color paintings. There are many GREAT things from the public domain in Wikipedia Commons and at the Library of Congress online. I made helpful comments below the photos I uploaded as good examples under "Files."
