Design an eye-catching icon for industrial app.

Our business provides training, programs, and tools/apps for private businesses and public agencies to ensure the safety, efficiency and compliance of their employees and processes.

We need an icon for Smart SOP™, our mobile app that allows users to create and manage their standard operating procedures (commonly referred to as SOPs). We developed it originally for our primary clients who are water and wastewater agencies in California. Since we launched we have seen that industrial clients like manufacturers and engineering firms use it as well. We feel our best marketing opportunities are with manufacturers and other industrial settings. Our existing logo has a water drop design and does not really represent the app at all, so it’s time for something new. The end user uses Smart SOP™ to create standard operating procedures for operating equipment and completing work processes. The SOPs include: step-by-step “how-to” instructions, identification of the hazards they might encounter on the job, and personal protective equipment that they need to wear. Smart SOP™ makes it easy to create SOPs for both simple and complicated processes with text, photos and video. The goal is to use the SOPs to be safe, efficient and consistent. Employees who know exactly how to operate machinery and perform their job tasks are less likely to be injured, they work more efficiently, and they perform the work the same way as other employees. SOPs are also required by OSHA (the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration), so by law they need to have written procedures for all of their equipment and processes. One specific part of the app is used for Lockout/Tagout which is the process of locking a piece of equipment so it can’t be operated while it’s being serviced, and tagging it with a warning label so no one comes in contact with it. This is also required by OSHA and its purpose is to keep people safe from being electrocuted, trapped in a machine, or otherwise injured by a machine. We need the icon to have a professional/industrial feel, but be eye catching enough that workers can easily find it and open it on their phones/tablets in the middle of a job. The end users, the workers, will often be younger and likely to be attracted to more modern designs, but the design also needs to reflect that it is a serious, useful and functional app. The app interface’s main color is light blue so we need to incorporate it, but I find that there are a lot of blue app icons and ours doesn’t stand out visually. Industry and safety tend to use bolder colors like orange, yellow, red and green. The work environments tend to be mechanical/metal – think factory, warehouse, and garage. You may choose to incorporate the acronym SOP in the icon.
