As an artist, I create minimal, electronic/vocal music (in addition to free-lance production). I release much of it for free on soundcloud.com; I have also used bandcamp.com for releases in the past to draw in revenue.
What inspires you and how do you envision the design for your business?
About: I'm releasing an album within the next 6 months. The type of music I create is electronic, minimal, melodic, and maybe a little quirky. I would love if the album art could reflect that. Font: I want something minimal and light, with the album title and artist name in a font that draws inspiration from hand-drawn/hand-carved runic alphabets (similar to that featured on the album art of XOXO by the German rapper Casper). I am open to the placement and size of the text, but I have a feeling I would like them best at the very top and bottom, framing the art in the center. The album is called "Brash" and my name as an artist is "Taekele." Taekele should probably be at the top, Brash on the bottom. Design: As for the art, I would like something geometric, reminiscent of the "Geo Wires" trend. As the album is titled "Brash," it would be nice to incorporate that in some abstract way in the geometric design that will comprise the center point of the album cover. I drew inspiration for many of the aesthetics of the sounds and songs from rock ores. Particularly the textures of brass, pewter, lead, and precious stones... if that could be the inspiration for the geometric design, that would be ideal! Granted, the design is very much up to you! However, it would be great if it could be inspired by one of those ores or minerals, centered, as the main focal point, in addition to being in and of itself more or less symmetrical. I also like the idea of incorporating some mineral texture. If you want to explore using portions of artistically cropped, hi-def, close-up photos of any of the aforementioned minerals, stones, ores, etc., I would love to see how that could be implemented (as vague as that may be). Color: In terms of color, I would like the background white (simple enough!), the text black, as well as the geometric design, but with some pops of metallic color derived from the metals mentioned above.
The content details are mostly just guidelines. I really would like you to use the best of your creativity and, if that means doing something different to what I've detailed, please do so. My main concern is making an album cover that broadcasts and establishes my sound and aesthetic. Minimal, but interesting. Geometric, but light and natural. Mechanical, and yet human (with the runic font details). Very cutting edge, but also somehow classic. Also, you may refer to my old music as a basic guide for my sound and style. I used to release music under the name "Calvin Emerson" on soundcloud.com (it's still up, if you want to browse). One of my songs has recently gained a lot of traction (10k+ listens in a short period) and that helps direct attention to the new release. With excellent artwork, the release will be received more warmly, and the album art will serve as promotional material on Tumblr, Facebook, etc.
