Business & Consulting
One-person consultancy doing social program Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E). I essentially mirror the process of academic social science research but with a very different purpose: instead of trying to publish or contribute to general knowledge, the business tries to provide timely information based on empirical evidence to decision-makers. For example, how does the director of international programs at a foundation in Minneapolis know whether the millions in grant money going into capacity-building is actually helping farmers in nine countries in Africa? More importantly, what information would help guide the future of the program? Which components are effective? How? Why? The work involves trying to mold a client, a time period, and a budget to the vast repertoire of social science methods out there to provide useful information (not perfect, impervious, just useful) at the right time.

Design specifics: While it is ok to reference the word Flux or the letter F, I would prefer that the non-text portion of the logo not simply be another 'F' (visually repetitive). Also, the name should definitely 'pop' off the page - nothing too subtle, grey-on-grey. I want it to be clearly readable from a distance. Business operates out of New Orleans, LA. One group of clients is local/regional, mostly small NGOs. Other clients are large, international funders like foundations (e.g. Bill & Melinda Gates, McKnight), governments (e.g. USAID, DFID, IDRC, UN, ILO), and large corporations. The name "Flux" comes from complexity theory/systems thinking, and references Heracletus, one of the earliest proponents of some of the base ideas. He says, "all is flux, nothing stays still." His ideas had to do with the one-way arrow of time, irreversibility, and change as the only constant. See image: I really like the idea of ink in water (although I would not want it going down, wrong connotation). Beyond being visually beautiful, it represents that idea of complexity, evolution/movement, and irreversibility (you can never get the ink back out of the water).
