Business & Consulting
[our website http://co-risk.org/] We are a consulting firm working to improve the resilience of communities against disaster and climate risk. Our audience are foundations (Rockefeller, Knight, etc), large NGOs (Red Cross, Oxfam, etc), international development organisations (World Bank, United Nations) who hire us as advisors/researchers/consultants to design or work on disaster risk reduction and international development projects. We are a worker-owned cooperative structure, bringing together experts from engineering, design, policy, communications and more to work on impactful projects. From our mission statement: Co-Risk Labs believes that responding to the challenges in disaster and climate risk in the 21st Century is a collective responsibility that requires shared understanding and collaborative action. We work with communities and organizations to redesign our approach to creating and acting upon risk information. We do this through: Cultivating impactful projects: Improving the quality of technical practice in our field through evaluation, research, design, experimentation, training and communication. Bring forward bold projects that demonstrate how technical excellence and values of social justice can align and improve disaster risk reduction and recovery practice. Cultivating new ideas: Facilitate the formation of new alliances and the co-development of alternative solutions and understandings, changing the way that technical staff, large organisations and publics produce knowledge together. Cultivating people: Teach technical experts in our field (including ourselves!) how to think more critically about our work. Emphasize approach over recipe. Embrace uncertainty and experimentation. Explore new ways of working together, through a cooperative structure, supporting each other in becoming better practitioners, more engaged citizens and more fulfilled people.
Three things: (1) The name "Co-Risk Labs" is meant to describe our field of work (disaster "risk" reduction), our experimental / research / design nature ("Labs") and the "Co" could refer to our cooperative structure, our collaborative / co-design approach, our community focus, etc. (2) We are technical experts in our discipline, but are critical of the exclusive use of technical expertise in the field of disaster risk reduction and international development in general (which ignores politics, power, inequality, etc). Our principles are: We keep our feet “planted in the craft work of design” and “in the reflexive work of critique.” We are passionate about our technical disciplines with social consciousness and curiosity. We strive to bring imagination, creativity and critical thinking to our leadership. We are passionate about growing, learning, nurturing. We want to be artists in all that we do. (3) Our goal is not only to do impactful work but to do it via a different structure. Through our member-owner cooperative structure, we establish democratic decision-making, are driven by our passion rather than profits, have flexible work modes, are highly collaborative and interdisciplinary.
