Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk
The Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk is a free event held every second Thursday in and around the Historic Core's Gallery Row neighborhood. For this one night each month, Downtown LA returns to its historic pedestrian-based culture, a vibrant scene that is itself a draw for locals and tourists seeking an authentic urban experience. Launched in 2004 by the then-gritty neighborhood's pioneer gallerists, Art Walk has become a grassroots urban success story, with upwards of 10,000 people coming out each month to see the newest art exhibits, enjoy the bustling street culture, eat, drink and socialize. The Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk is a non-profit, California Public Benefit Corporation.
The Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk attracts a vibrant, primarily young pool of urban explorers who enjoy contemporary visual art, music, social gatherings, historic architecture, exploration and cutting edge culture. Our logo needs to reflect this interesting audience, our location in the heart of LA's circa 1900 Historic Core neighborhood, but also to be serious and sophisticated enough to appeal to potential donors and granting organizations.
[UPDATE 10/13: Dear designers: if you are not inspired by the neon sign idea, do feel free to submit an original design that you think will suit our organization and event. We don't wish to discourage creativity and engagement, and maybe the best idea is one we have not yet thought of. Thank you! Original requirements follow.]
Our Board has decided that the ideal logo reflects the spirit of a beloved neon LA roof sign: the historic, heart-shaped Roslyn Hotel sign. (We have obtained permission from building's owners for this adaptive use).

The basic shape and color scheme of the logo should be derived from the Roslyn Hotel sign, with the following phrases included: Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk / Since 2004.
In the reference image, you can see the sign lit up at night, and a rough mock up showing how we would like the name of our event to be laid out. Please do not feel obligated to stick strictly to the mock up, or the color scheme, which is merely meant as conceptual inspiration. You're the designer, and we welcome your best ideas.
Our logo should easily adapt to multiple uses: the main use will be on our website and printed map (currently printed in b&w, to be printed in color eventually), but we are interested in a design that will also look good on business cards and t-shirts.
Please do not use stock images or clip art, and identify/provide any fonts used. The winner must agree to sign a contract prepared by our legal advisor, assigning us full and perpetual ownership of the artwork. Final, winning designs should be submitted as vector image and in hi-res TIFF format with all layers accessible.
