We are a brand new, small (only 4 people now), high-tech start-up that has come up with a great idea for locating WiFi devices very accurately (within a foot) indoors. Our invention (we've already filed 3 patent applications - many more to come) provides a huge improvement over other state-of-the-art WiFi location technologies; the best ones being used today can deliver at most 10 meter (33 ft) accuracy. Applications for our new location technology include: indoor route guidance in malls, museums, and buildings; indoor emergency 911 location; location-based access and security (e.g., "you can only use my WiFi network if you're located in this physical area"); location-based advertising; route guidance for the blind, and search and rescue.
I came up with the name Diani Systems when I was sitting on the beach during my honeymoon in Diani, Kenya; it was at that time that I realized that I wanted to do a location technology company as my next start-up (I had been working for Cisco for the past 3 years).
Before Cisco 3 of us were founders of a small start-up called Cognio (short for "Cognitive Radio") another WiFi technology start-up that Cisco acquired in 2007.
A bit more about us as individuals: we're electrical engineers - men in our early forties, but don't think of us as "boring engineers"; we're fun loving, beer drinking guys with good senses of humor.
We will most likely license the technology to WiFi chip or technology companies (e.g., Broadcom, Atheros or Qualcomm), WiFi networking companies (e.g., Cisco, Aruba Networks, HP or Motorola) or Smartphone companies (Apple, Google, Samsung, etc.) - so we'll definitely want these kinds of companies to look at our logo and get excited about it. But we may also sell products such as location sensors and WiFi tags or badges to places like shopping malls, stadiums, universities, museums, hospitals, municipalities (small towns), so the logo could wind up on our products one day as well.
Pretty much the sky's the limit here - just be creative and do your thing.
Ideas to consider: anything that conveys the concepts of wireless and pin point location - see websites below.
Should we consider conveying the idea of being at the beach since that's how the company got its name? My gut tells me no, since we're a location technology company, not a surfing company. But I'm open to just about anything.
My gut tells me that only the word "Diani", instead of "Diani Systems" should be in the logo since the latter sounds too techy, but I'm open to it if it looks good. Note that Cisco's old logo had "Cisco Systems" in it, but now it just says "Cisco".
I've attached the logo we used at Cognio that I liked for reference.
