Ainability - The root of sustainability. The seeds of enrichment.
Hawaii imports over 85% of our food. Producing only about 15% of the food we consume on the islands leaves us very vulnerable, so we're developing a platform called Ainability to enhance the viability of local agriculture by helping make healthy, tasty eating more affordable and convenient. (Aina means land in Hawaii.) The Ainability platform leverages web-based technologies to connect landholders with growers and growers with consumers. Those who know how to grow food can be linked to those who have land and are willing to allow farming/gardening to occur and vise-versa.
We're also looking at innovative delivery and pick-up systems to make the whole experience that much easier for everyone.
Our goal is to create a locally based agricultural system that supports farmers, improves the economy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions via lower "food miles", diminishes the amounts of chemicals entering our land, water and bodies and supports communities to enable healthy, self-sufficient lifestyles.
Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
From a design perspective Ainability looks at the whole system from land, water and energy to nutrients and calories to education, economics and policy. Perhaps simple, clean icons representing environment, community and economy, like a sun & sprouting seed (or taro plant), a family (man, woman, boy, girl), and fish (representing abundance or prosperity).
