Sometimes Has Legs…
Some of the best times we had, as our kids were growing up,were around birthday and Christmas time.
We’d give the kids time to come up with clever questions to ask for clues so they could guess what they were going to get for presents.
Of course, we’d always lie if they got too close with their guesses.
Parental lying was always permitted around any type of gift or surprise at any time of year.
We sure didn’t want our kids to dampen the surprise.
I, myself, always tried to be as truthful and confusing as possible so they’d never catch on.
I’m not a really good liar….but I continue to practice.
We also didn’t let the kids duplicate their questions, so it was always a thinking game from their perspective.
Anticipation was most often as good as the actual gift received.
Julie, our 12 year old at the time, was needing a new saddle to ride, so that’s what we got for her birthday. She asked a multitude of questions on color, size, weight, material and even origin. She even tried to shake the saddle box, which was quite heavy for a 12 year old.
We kept our answers basic and elusive….until she went out of the box (no pun intended) and asked if it had legs? She thought she had us!
I thought a moment, then a humorous epiphany hit me…...I told her “sometimes”.
As you can clearly see, when the saddle is being used, it’s on a horse...with legs.
When it's not being used on the horse, it no longer has legs.
What a wonderfully honest and accurate answer that would throw even the most seasoned guesser off their game!
Who only knows where her curious mind went?
“Sometimes” was the only answer we gave her she could get any traction from, but on slick ice.
Needless to say, she was joyfully surprised with the gift when her birthday came around.
But much more came out of that elusive answer. The well thought out humorous game we played carried on throughout our lives as a benchmark of fun and laughter.
Julie & I would always use “sometimes has legs” in comparison to a lifetime of funny memories and events. Kinda our inside joke we’d share out loud so others could laugh too.
We both knew eventually we’d create a book or something about “Sometimes Has Legs”.
It’s time for more laughter and humor in our lives...so this is our journey to bring others along with us.
So saddle up with “Sometimes has legs” and lets get back to the humor of our lives!
