MadMan2009 got their new app design by running a design contest:
Award + additional work: iPad music notation wireframe -> eye-popping screenshot!!
Check out MadMan2009's App design contest…
We are creating the next great iPad application for musicians. We are looking for an extremely talented designer who can help turn our wire-frame into a magnificent looking screen (.psd). That will mean creating an icon-based menu bar with appropriate icons on the top of the app and a navigation interface at the bottom, an interface for manipulating "layers" (like photoshop layers, but for music), and some miscellaneous elements. The winner of the contest will be potentially brought on for additional work as the project's designer, since this will be an ongoing project with an expanding personnel roster and we have not finalized all of the screens at this point. We anticipate having several generations of the product. Whether you love music or not, if you think you have what it takes to help turn our Wireframe into a stunning image, then show us what you've got! We will provide detailed feedback for all submissions, and know that talent can come from anywhere.
We're looking for something clear but somewhat distinctive, fusing traditional styles with the modern toolsets of the iPad/Tablets. We don't want schlock, but crisp and clean designs that are self-explanatory and intuitive. Icons preferred over words where possible. We value simplicity. This should be something that professional musicians can use for hours a day. Some random things we like: rounded corners in place of sharp corners (as per the iOS interface), strategically placed shadows (also as per the iOS interface), simple-ish color schemes that are also beautiful (we suspect that white/grey/silver/black/off-white/etc. will be the best color scheme, but we're open to other ideas, especially those that recall certain music publishers). The background for the music itself should be a simple off-white. No texture. Remember that the app exists as a means of interacting with the music itself, which should not be dwarfed by the interface itself. The music should take up the most screen space possible.
WOW US - AWARD + ADDITIONAL WORK!! IPAD MUSIC NOTATION WIREFRAME -> EYE-POPPING SCREENSHOT!
Users will be able to open up a piece of sheet music and interact with the music using the system's interface. The first image uploaded here is the "WIREFRAME". This is the page you will be creating. You should overlay your design on top of the score provided in the "SHEETMUSIC" image so we can what your design looks like in the context of the application. Please do not use different sheet music.
What to avoid
Wood Boring and uninspired designs... this should be elegant and simple, but also interesting and creative!! We believe that borders (and backgrounds) should be used judiciously. B/B are important in properly grouping content selections. The borders/backgrounds should feel natural and too many groupings makes the page feel overly complex. Too few makes the page look bland. Giving a little 3D/depth the can be nice stylistically, but can also be too much if not implemented correctly.
