What's your vision?
A map of Western Australia that will go at the front of my book, typically a 9x6 book, as well as on Kindle. So it needs to be black & white. Not too much detail that it is confusing, but enough to make it interesting. I prefer a sophisticated and minimal design rather than being too flashy. Colour: Black & white and grey scale. I recently read, ‘Conclave’ by Robert Harris and he has a map of the Vatican at the front of his book. I’m after a similar style to that (attached). I’ve also attached a map of Western Australia FYI.
NOTE FOR DESIGNERS: I've attached a graphic of a Brilliant Cut Diamond. Maybe put a small image of this near the word, 'Mt Robertson'. Also perhaps put an image (line drawing) of a large open pit dump truck near the word, 'Newman. Any suggestions of your own to improve the map would be welcome. Finally, once the WA map is complete, I'll be seeking another map for the book. This second map will be of Central London. Peter Details: EXTRA INFO AT END. Western Australian Map Showing: • The whole state with just the borders to the Northern Territory and South Australia; • A small circle or similar showing the whole of Australia to show where WA is in relation to it; • A scale bar; • A North compass direction; • The Indian Ocean; • Perth; • Kalgoorlie: maybe show some mining headframes to signify gold mining; • Albany, Peaceful Bay; Bunbury, Esperance, Geraldton, Meekatharra, Newman, Port Hedland, Broome; • National Parks and State Forests of the South West (don’t have to label them all; • Major Highways; in particular Highways 95 & 138 running from Perth to Port Hedland; • Main deserts of Western Australia: Great Victoria Desert, Great Sandy Desert, Gibson Desert; • The railway running from Newman to Port Hedland (this is shown on Google maps). May need to change the route slightly to make it cross the Fortescue River at Jasper's Gap; • The Fortescue River. May need to change its route slightly to go under the railway; • A fictitious place named, Jasper's Gap, approximately midway between Mulga Downs (on Highway 95) and Highway 138 on an east-west line, where the railway (between Newman and Port Hedland) crosses the Fortescue River (some artistic licence can be used for this). That is, the Fortescue River flows through Jasper's Gap. To the east of Jasper's Gap is desert. To the west of Jasper's gap is a wide floodplain for the river. However, at this scale, you may not be able to show this detail. • Close by is another fictitious place named, Mt Robertson. This is a volcanic plug that is shaped like a volcano but without the crater. A winding dirt road leads from Highway 95 to Mt Robertson. May be too difficult to show details at this scale; The Book is called 'Rough Cut' and is due to be released later this year. Designers can view details of this book on my website to get a feel for it. My website is: www.peteragray.com.au and have the sound on and view it on your PC. ADDITIONAL INFO: The finished paperback size would be 9x6, butb there is no reason why the maap couldn't spread over two pages. Also the size will automatically adjusted to fit on a Kindle etc. The Fortescue River can be shown as a meandering line, but don't worry about all the lakes. (the river is dry most of the time anyway). You can take some artistic licence with its location. Don't worry about showing all the rivers in WA. In the story, the international iron ore company that is constructing a mine at Newman, needs to build a railway to the port of Port Hedland. So the railway must cross the Fortescue River. The best and cheapest way to cross the river is at (the fictional) Jasper's Gap, a deep cutting. If the railway wants to avoid Jasper's Gap, it has to cross a mile wide flood plain to the West or go out into the desert to the East. The hero of Rough Cut owns the land around Jasper's Gap, and the iron ore company are eventually forced to pay him a royalty for a 'Right of Way Agreement.' This income enables him to explore his land in detail and he discovers diamonds at the nearby, about 20 kilometres, (fictional) Mt Robertson. Hence both Jasper's Gap and Mt Robertson are important in the story. You could show the detail of Jasper's Gap and Mt Robertson in an expanded bubble in part of the desert etc. NOTE: 1. WA should occupy most of the map, not vast chunks of the Indian Ocean. 2. Don't have fancy fonts. Use Serif fonts similar to the Robert Harris example I attached (I like Trajan Pro). 3. Keep it clean and modern. 4. Don't have very large compass directions or scale bars. 5. The important things to get across are: the size of WA, and where the hero's journey takes him in WA (Perth, Kalgoorlie, Newman, Peaceful Bay, Jasper's Gap, Mt Robertson etc). Any queries, let me know, Thanks for your interest, Peter Gray
