Clever Algorithms: Nature-Inspired Programming Recipes
A cover is needed for a technical self-published book, ideally with a motif that can be reused on a website. The book will be published as a paperback, ebook, and website.
The content of the book describes a large number (approximately 50) algorithms from the fields of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in a standardized way. All of the described algorithmic methods are stochastic (use randomness), and most are inspired by biological and natural processes, such as the foraging behaviour of ants, the flocking of birds, and the adaptive processes of evolution and the acquired immune system. The underlying pattern of these algorithms is the emergence of complex behaviour from simple and easy to understand rules, directed at solving intractable mathematics and engineering problems.
The objective of the book is the clear and standardized presentation of a diverse collection of algorithms to make them accessible, usable, and interesting to a broader audience. The focus of the book are the concise code examples written in the Ruby programming language.
The target audience include: Computer Science Students, Programmers, Interested Amateurs, and Research Scientists in the fields of Biologically Inspired Computation, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
Really, the book is for a the curious student, early career researcher or programmer.
Some books in this field have covers have ugly abstract images from the field of evolutionary art. Even worse, some have dry depictions of math problems. I'm generally not a fan of any of these approaches (although, I'm not adverse to abstract imagery). This field of research is exciting and fun to study, the cover must suggest that to the target audience.
A possibly interesting creative direction to explore would be the nature of the book itself: the aggregation of a host of disparate algorithms under one umbrella - like an encyclopedia. A standardization effort that, like the algorithms themselves, take the many small parts together and provides (hopefully) something more than the sum.
A table of contents for the book is attached.
For motivation, the Wikipedia entries of Particle Swarm Optimization, Ant Colony Optimization, and the Genetic Algorithm, may provoke the creative juices. The art on http://www.complexification.net/, although unrelated, evokes a familiar visual feel to watching visualizations of these algorithms.
The book is a reference, but the algorithms are fun and their metaphors inspire. The cover must do the same. Imagery that exploits the complex, adaptive, biological and physical inspirations would be engaging, although the reference nature of the text suggests class.
Bonus points if the design provides a motif that can be taken and used on other media, such as on the website or even varied for use as art or watermark on each chapter heading page. This could be indirect, such as a suggested theme.
