Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
I'm a freelance writer and the author of Looking Up: A Memoir of Sisters, Survivors and Skokie, one of seven sisters, and I speak to groups both about my book and about my experiences growing up with survivor parents and their experiences in the war. My book is both funny - about growing up in this truly charmed childhood in Skokie, an idyllic suburb of Chicago - and tragic, in that it recounts my parents' experiences as well. Walking from the safe world of my suburban childhood into our house, where the Nazis were forever on the march, was one of the great dichotomies of my childhood. My book has been out for 10 months and is well-reviewed and selling well but I would like to put out a second edition with a professional cover.
What inspires you and how do you envision the design for your business?
I'd like a new book cover designed. I originally used a photo of a blue sky with fluffy white clouds on it, taken by myself. I do love this image, especially since it reflects the title of "Looking Up," but my cover looks unprofessionally designed. It was designed using Cover Creator on CreateSpace. The book has a few themes that could be used - from the Looking Up theme, the blue sky with fluffy clouds, forest images to reflect my mother's experiences living in the forest running from the Nazis, some Siberian-type images to reflect my father's experience during the war, the suburban boxy houses of Skokie or the seven sisters in my family. Images of tall stands of trees are pretty compelling, though I have none that are not copyrighted. More information on my book can be viewed at Amazon.com. The book ends with us driving away from Skokie on my parents' continuous run from everything that ties them to Judaism, just as they had run from their villages and from Eastern Europe. I was 13 at that time, sitting in the back of our Town and Country Station Wagon, watching as Skokie disappeared behind us.
The subtitle of my book on its present cover ended up smaller than I preferred but CreateSpace didn't allow any altering of font size. I'd like the subtitle to be more noticeable than it is on the present cover. Thank you!
