*** UPDATE ***
You guys are doing great!!! Make sure you think about the fact that we'd like to add insignias over the final design. Think about where we could place an insignia like this on your designs

*** CONTEST ***
We create on-demand apparel for the military. We work like CafePress or Zazzle -- we provide designs and then let customers modify them -- only we are focused on the military. Now we need edgier background designs to appeal to young, hip servicemen and women. We serve every branch of the military -- Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard, etc. We market through AAFES.com, directly targeting 25 million active duty, reserve and former servicemen and women.
We will award multiple winners (if entries are good), we need lots of designs.
Our audience is a largely male demographic ranging in age from 20-34, both active service members and their friends and family. They serve in every branch of the military -- Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard, etc. They tend to look for edgier designs that are respectful of their service but not still push the design envelope.
We are looking for a number of "all purpose" base (background) designs to place various branch and division logos on. Examples attached.
We want cool backgrounds that can then be customized with a particular insignia (you create the background, our artists will add the insignia).
The base design doesn't need to be military (but it can be) or patriotic (but it can be), but it DOES need to be hip and modern (think Affliction or UFC). Think powerful, grungy, Ed Hardy-like, hip or cool.
No limit on colors (these will be printed on full-color equipment).
We will only be printing on t-shirt front or back (not on the sides or shoulders) -- so everything should fit in a 12 inch wide by 15 inch high rectangle.
You do NOT need to provide the Army or other insignia, just the design that will surround it (as in the example). Our artists will then add the military insignia, and use these designs as templates for shirts we offer to the military.
We will choose multiple winners (if we get great submissions!). We will ultimately need a dozen or more designs (and more in the future).
