Developed and written by Julie M. Graham, “Good Morning to You” (or GMTY) is an easy-to-read children’s digital and interactive storybook that is meant for the intended audience of five-to-eight year-olds. The book can be read aloud digitally or self read. The premise of this children’s story is focussed of the thoughts of a ‘child’, approximately seven years of age, waking up and taking time to celebrate and appreciate “life” and the many creatures, places, and things that make up their world.
Color palette should match the book's. Imagery will be from the book's but also profile photos of numerous contributors. Placeholders of various sizes and aspect ratios will be made available.
Home: The home page is naturally the landing page of the website. Its primary responsibility is to fully represent GMTY. If visitors never go into any other page and instead disembark from the website to one of the external links that takes them to a purchase product page, then the design of the Home page is a success. In other words, the goal of the home page is to actually get the visitor to leave and go to the iOS App Store, Amazon, or some other site that sells the book. News: The purpose of the News page is to provide a place for us to put product announcements, PR, news and to link to external sites that have press about the product as well as Autism awareness topics. Biographies: The purpose of the biographies page is to provide a single place where major contributors of the book will be written about. Autism: The autism page will be a landing page for visitors to go to in order to begin to learn about autism. Contact: This page will be used by visitors to contact us. It will contain a form that they can fill out, as well as an e-mail address that they can directly use.
What to avoid
Since this will be coded up later as a responsive website for various screen sizes (for mobile and desktop), using elements that are known to have issues with responsive design should be avoided; using your best judgement and experience.
One thing I'd like to point out about our needs that probably isn't very obvious (nor considered normal) is the fact that though the needs of the site have elements beyond just the landing page, ideally we'd prefer that visitors to the website pretty much leave it *very quickly* and to navigate off of the website to the links provided to the product on the Apple App Store, iBooks, and Amazon Kindle site, etc. The primary purpose of the site is to have a landing page for advertising, promotions, social media blitzes etc. But we ultimately need visitors to take the necessary steps to actually *get* the book in one of the formats. So what this probably means in terms of design is that the links to *leave* the site to one of the distribution channels shouldn't take much interaction with the site to see and click on them (i.e. perhaps as close to the top of the landing page as possible with minimal to no scrolling) *and* be on every page of the site so that no matter where they are on the site, they can get to a place that sells the book. A full requirements document is being provided, though it includes details that aren't relevant for the design phase. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask for clarifications.
