@USAutoControls got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Industrial Automation Distributor Needs a New, Responsive Website
Check out @USAutoControls's Web page design contest…
Our website provides an e-commerce source for Automation Controls and Components to industry. These things are the "brains, senses, and circuitry" of automatic machinery. Our target audience is comprised of engineers, and maintenance technicians who build, and maintain these machines. We need a Responsive Web Design for viewing in handhelds to large desktop monitors. A simple, clean design to give our customers a facility to purchase any of our 40,000+ products.
This site must be written to be viewable, and workable on a phone, handheld, tablet, desktop, or TV monitor. We are looking for RWD coding. An example of RWD can be seen at www.proliahcp.com. See how it behaves in a fluid manner, and adjusts to the monitor size. Our logo should set the color scheme of our site. This is a site regarding "Industrial Automation". There should be a "wow" factor with the level of technology that is available to the visitor. We wish the site to have a "humanizing" affect on the visitor. Our customers become part of a community as they get to know us. We want the visitor to know "Our Story", and the story of the owners. They should wish to return to our site because they know us, and feel comfortable with us. The design should be simple, and clean. Uncluttered, and intuitive. Persistent navigation links should be in predictable locations. Additions to the shopping cart should be reflected in a shopping cart item tally. We wish to start simply, and maintain the simplicity as we build out to further enhancements considered in the future.
1.) Coding for a responsive web design, we will need a "Home Page" that strongly suggests a call to action by encouraging a search of a part number. The consequential search result should suggest a part number, or part numbers, if the visitor doesn't get the part number exactly right in the initial search. The search will be a query within our webstore. We currently use PDGsoft for our webstore, and shopping cart. (http://www.pdgsoft.com/ecommerce.htm). This interfaces, and synchronizes with our Intuit QuickBooks Enterprise software. 2.) Clicking on a part number from within the initial search will bring the visitor to a "Product Page". This page will feature an image of the product, a description of the product, pricing of the product, availability of the product, (whether it is in stock, or if there will be a lead time until it ships), a link to a pdf file to provide further detail of its description and complimentary products within the series. Customers that are reselling our product as is, or as part of their original equipment should be prompted to "Request a Quote for Resale or OEM Discount". This will send an email to our sales department that requests resale pricing, and we will respond with a price suited to their requirement, and usage. 3.) "About Us" will provide a description of what our business is about, why we started it, with photos, and profiles of the partners. 4.) "Customer Testimonials" including quotes, and reviews from satisfied customers. 5.) "Contact Us" page will include phone numbers, a contact form, a way to subscribe to our newsletter, "Like Us" on Facebook, "Follow Us" on twitter, etc...
What to avoid
Avoid posting email addresses which invite spam. We should try to keep information "above the fold", or above the bottom of the visitors window. We should include high quality images to inspire confidence in what they are buying.
We would like our customers to feel as though we are their concierge to all things within our industry. We are concerned about satisfying their needs, and wants. We aren't necessarily selling the products, but we are trying to make their lives easier. We would like to listen to what they want, and respond with a fulfillment of that want. We even want the visitor, and customer to help in the development of the website. Allow them to respond to our question "How are we doing?", "How can the site serve you better?".
