Jeffrey Way got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Redesign Laracasts (and become our go-to person for future work)
Check out Jeffrey Way's Web page design contest…
Laracasts is a video training website for working developers. Think of it like Netflix, but for web developers.
I'm open to all ideas, but generally: - Light on the images. The less the better, really. Of course you'll have a couple, which is fine, but don't go crazy with stock photos and such. - Lean toward flat design. Pastels are good. - I'm looking for a very clean design for the next iteration of the site. The more white space, the better. - Simple, custom hand-drawn illustrations would be great! Preferential treatment might be given to those who focus on the Laracasts branding more, including the logo. Is there a icon/graphic/character that could be part of the logo and site? Up to you!
You can start with only the home page, but ultimately give me your best version of these four pages: - Home Page: https://laracasts.com/ - Overview Page: https://laracasts.com/series - Series Page: https://laracasts.com/series/laravel-5-from-scratch - Video Page: https://laracasts.com/series/laravel-5-from-scratch/episodes/10 You can use the existing content at laracasts.com (or substitute similar dummy content), but arrange it any way you like. You have a 100% clean slate. So don't feel like you need to use the same layout even remotely. We'd prefer you not. We're looking for fresh ideas to display the content, episode list and such. A couple specifics: - Home Page (https://laracasts.com/) You can use the current Laracasts home page to pull any content you need, however, add a pricing grid to the bottom of your design. See https://laracasts.com/join for the plan options. Also, I'd like to emphasize the large community more than we do. Maybe there's a section that says something like, "Join thousands of developers improving their craft, just like you." And then it could have a 30x30 grid of user avatars as the background. I'm not sure, but have a think on it. If you do need any user avatars, you'll find a bunch at the bottom of this page: https://laracasts.com/discuss - Overview Page (https://laracasts.com/series) This is a key area that we want to improve. As you can see, right now on the site, it's a long collection of series thumbnails in a grid. That's it. I'd like this to feel more like Netflix, where there are divided sections, based upon the category. For examples, one section would be called "What's new in Laravel", and it would contain: - https://laracasts.com/series/whats-new-in-laravel-5-1 - https://laracasts.com/series/whats-new-in-laravel-5-2 - https://laracasts.com/series/whats-new-in-laravel-5-3 Another divided section could be "Master Your Code Editor" and would contains: - https://laracasts.com/series/vim-mastery - https://laracasts.com/series/sublime-text-mastery - https://laracasts.com/series/how-to-be-awesome-in-phpstorm You get the idea. For the remainder, you can use dummy placeholders.
What to avoid
You may keep the existing #00B1B3 green as the main color, or feel free to choose your own color scheme. Pastels are nice, but up to you. Lots of white would be nice.
Laracasts is a video site, just like Hulu or Netflix. Try to optimize your design and layout, with that in mind. The content and the community are the main focus. However, even though this is an educational site, try not to go down the University website route. That's too corporate. Keep it fun. We're all just a bunch of people trying to get better at our craft. Log in to view the full Laracasts site. You'll notice that the series page changes slightly to reflect the signed in user. Here is a free forum account you may use to log in. URL: https://laracasts.com/login Email: email@example.com Password: password The site is made up of series and episodes. A series is a group of sequential episodes. Here is an example: https://laracasts.com/series/laravel-5-from-scratch You'll notice that each series has an associated thumbnail. But that's the only thing that separates each series from one another. We'd like every series to feel more custom and special. Maybe the entire banner has a background image dedicated to that series. CodeSchool does this nicely: https://www.codeschool.com/courses/try-ruby A big goal for this redesign is to make each series feel a bit more distinct, rather than the exact template with only a different 200px thumbnail. So think about that, as you prep your design. Maybe there's a custom thumbnail AND background banner image that fills the width of the page. You decide. Lastly, as noted earlier, don't go too formal. Keep it clean and classic. No stock photos of actors staring and smiling, as they point to their computer screens. This is a site for developers - typically in the 20-30 age bracket. So fun and friendly is what we're looking for. So, if you had to choose, more 80s movie references, and less uber-serious Microsoft. :)
