School of Mindfulness Website Design Specs
(i have listed the full design spec here in one place that answers all other questions in the other forms on this page)
Outcome of the site: The main outcome of the site is to build a profile as an authority on mindfulness & meditation and to filter people into live retreats, courses and talks. Secondly to make available for free – Simple, clear, comprehensive teachings on these topics. Teachings will be in the form of written lessons and articles and some videos. This will be a wordpress site.
Child Theme Template to Base Layout From
I like the layout of this theme
I would like to use a lot of the layout of this template but with an overhaul to the look and feel. You will note that this template is referenced a lot in this spec.
Courses & Classes
Home Page and overall look and feel of the site
The 1st outcome of the homepage is to get people to sign up to the email newsletter. Second is to get them reading content.
Since my website is about meditation and mindfulness I would like to soften the whole look and feel (of the streamline theme) considerably. I would like the predominant colors to be neutral tones with maybe a splash of greens, earthy tones. I would like it to look less corporate more friendly. I’d like to portray a feeling of simplicity and friendliness with a theme of /nature/zen style spirituality.
I like a lot about this site http://www.pachamama.com/ and would like to take a lot of their look and feel. I like the simple friendliness of this site. I also like their neutral earthy tones for a base with then a splash of color.
I also like the hand drawn, hand painted look that parts of the website have and I would like to bring this feel into my site. I like also how the background on the front page has almost like a parchment look to it – its very softening – and the colored blocks on the home page also have the same effect.
I do not wish to have that kind of font they are using. It’s a bit to tribal and sharp looking. I’d like a friendly kind of font used throughout the site but that conveys a softness and fluidness but that is easy to read. I like the idea of a sort of handwritten look for headlines. One thing I don’t like about their site is that it does not really convey a feeling of professionalism and therefore trust.
One of the major things I don’t like about pachamama is that its not obvious what a visitor is supposed to do or read when they land on the site. Its kind of confusing and for example the orange and red “Air Season – Nov 12 – Feb 13” etc on the right side draws the eye when really the eye should be drawn to something that explains why someone should stay on the site and read on rather than just hitting the back button. Ie it’s a pretty bad user experience.
I would like the School of Mindfulness ‘logo’ to appear with Mindfulness as the predominant word.
The size/position of the logo on the webpage should be similar to http://www.studiopress.com/get-started or http://www.artofblog.com/ and then we’ll leave the main space on the page for the headline.
As in the previous 2 example websites (studio press and art of blog) I would like to have a headline and then a subheadline (more like art of blog).
Headline - ‘Education in the Art of Mindful Living’
Subheadline - The School of Mindfulness provides tools and teachings to help you cultivate, strengthen and sustain mindful awareness in daily life.
Social Sharing Buttons
As in the streamline theme place social sharing buttons on the top right hand corner of the home page.
We’ll have the - FB, twitter, google +, rss feed buttons
Articles - When you mouse over the articles tab on the home page menu bar (A drop down should come down with the categories)
Courses & Classes
Tools –This page will also list different types of apps or other tools and books for people to consider including my own product of ‘mindfulness cards’
Email signup box → Mindful reminder sign up
As in the streamline theme I’d like to have a very prominent email sign up on the home page but am flexible on position. Id like this to not look so sharp and corporate like it does in the theme though.
Text (large)– Stay Connected.
Discover an oasis in your inbox. Subscribe for your free lessons and mindful reminders.
Sign up button text (subscribe now)
I will be using mailchimp to manage email newsletters and database
‘Featured Articles’ boxes on home page (as in example on streamline theme)
For these 3 boxes (as in the streamline theme) please look at http://www.pachamama.com/default.asp again. I like the way they have the three different neutral tones (brown, beige & khaki green) on that front page in each column with a light beige / cream background.
I am open to design ideas for presentation of these boxes. We could go with or without images (no photo images just simple images) depending on what you feel works with your design. If using images please consider a nature/spirituality theme for images and keep the 3 images uniform in size and design style.
Text for boxes…

Right hand Sidebar
(the right hand side bar does not have to be present on the home page but will need to be present on all article pages. I will leave it up to your discretion as to wether to put on the home page or not depending on the look and feel)
Each of the following is a separate section / widget in the right sidebar. Please place them in the order numbered here from top to bottom
1.Email newsletter box
Text (big) ‘Mindful Reminders’
(small) Subscribe for your weekly dose of mindfulness.
2. Browse by Category
Add a widget that allows visitors to browse by category.
This widget will allow people to browse by category of article. In this box should be the headline ‘Browse by topic’
Category names appear in either a drop down menu or a scrolling list under headline. These category names will be links to articles on the topic. This list of categories should be able to be added to as I create new articles. Organize by alphabetical order.
3.‘About me’ box
Main text -Meet Mellissa
Smaller text –Meditation Mindfulness Teacher & Founder of the school of mindfulness – please leave room for a testimonial in the box
Picture to come
Article presentation on home page
I would like the articles to appear as condensed versions of each article (a picture, headline and the first rows of text) - then people can click through to read the full article. See this page for an example of what I mean. http://www.mercola.com/
For the article pages again refer to the streamline theme for basic layout including the right hand sidebar as discussed in the above section. What I don’t like about their theme demo article page (http://demo.studiopress.com/streaml) is the picture on top of the headline. The headline should always be on top
• Comment system – use Disqus 2012
• Articles displayed as content/sidebar
• Sharing buttons should be featured at the top and also at the bottom of each article and include a print and email sharing button (example - http://articles.mercola.com/sites/a )
Contact Us Page
Contact form (like streamline theme contact us) must be included on this page as well as text space for contact details.
The events page will need to have a template of some kind built into it so that every time I add a new talk, course or retreat it all displays in a uniform way and looks neat.
Each event should be able to display a picture, a headline and a decent paragraph of text (8-10 lines) and a read more and also a book now button. They should be displayed in date order. I like the way this one is presented http://www.eckharttolle.com/event/
When clicked – the user will land on a full page description of each event but these landing page should still all still look uniform and keep the book now button (prominent) and a picture. http://www.eckharttolletv.com/landing/event/dc/ great event page
The tools page will list different tools/products for people to use to integrate more mindfulness into their lives. Could you make this page a template that can display each ‘product’ nicely. It would be great if each could have a picture section and headline and just a few lines of text for each product. You would then click through for full description and details. (a bit like amazon do on their pages but with more text space http://www.amazon.com/Yoga-Sports-O There will probably only be 5-10 things displayed on this page so don’t make the displays to small
Some examples would be…
Mindfulness bells for computers
Mindfulness Bells for mobile phones
Its important that the site is designed to display nicely on ipads and iphones
