Check out andrew.morine's Web page design contest…
Dowell Windows (Dowell) is a market leading, privately-owned Australian windows and doors manufacturing company. With over 20 locations across Australia, including 8 manufacturing facilities, Dowell employs over 700 people to ensure our customers receive the best experience and value for money products. Dowell has been in business since 1860, originally starting out as an architectural wrought iron foundry and later getting into the windows and doors business in 1922. In 2020, Dowell turns 160 years old. To stay competitive within the manufacturing industry, we are seeking to improve our digital image by building a brand new website which puts our competitors to shame. Dowell’s primary customer base is residential builders. We also deal with owner builders, renovators and customers building new houses.
Our logo consists of three colours - Black (R0 G0 B0), Blue (R0 G96 B175) and Green (R0 G138 B75). While these are our primary colours, we are open to the use of other colours such as white and grey. We are also happy for designers to make other colour suggestions. Dowell has a collection of images / photography of our products used in customers houses. These images / photographs must be used as part of the designs. We are seeking a website which stands out from our competitors.
Homepage: Our main landing page should be a showpiece which is attractive and represents the Dowell brand. This page needs to be easy for visitors to navigate and find the information they require. When a visitor scrolls down the page they see sections for Windows, Doors, Screens, another section for Product Lines (UrbanLine, DesignerLine, ThermaLine, Timber), another section for Resources (Brochures, Energey Efficiency, Product Care, Warranty) and then the footer which also has menu navigation. Product Page: This page will be a template for each our products (for example, Sliding Door). It should contain information about each product, features, configuration and sizing, and additional options. Resources Page: This page will provide visitors with access to product brochures, CAD drawings, climate zone maps, energy efficiency, product care, maintenance, warranty and frequently asked questions (FAQ). About: This page should contain information about Dowell. It would be great to see a timeline style page which follows the history of Dowell to the present day. Contact Page: This page should provide a list of all our locations and contact information with an enquiry form for visitors to submit a quick enquiry. It should also provide a link to the Quote form.
What to avoid
Please avoid copying our competitors sites. We are seeking a unique web design. Thank you.
- We are seeking a high quality, professional design which exceeds that of our competitors. - Our new website will give visitors the option to select the state they live (QLD, NSW, VIC, TAS, ACT, WA). When a user selects their state, the are provided content relevant to that state only. The page designs should allow for this and also show their default state / location. - There is a lot of content / copy located in our brochures you can use as text within the designs - http://www.dowell.com.au/brochures.html. - We can supply access to some new images for the page designs. This can be accessed via Office 365 however I will require your email address so we can share them with you. - When designing our new website, please ensure you follow these guidelines: • Simplicity – not too many colours, legible typefaces and graphics which have a specific purpose. • Navigability – simple and intuitive navigation near the top of the page, navigation in the footer, utilise breadcrumbs and include a search box near the top of the site. Navigation must be consistent across all pages. • Consistency – the overall look and feel of the site should be consistent. This includes backgrounds, colour schemes and typefaces. This is not to say that all pages should be the same. • Accessibility – the design needs to be compatible with different devices, such as smart phones and tablets and be responsive. • Conventionality – utilise web design conventions which are familiar to internet users. For example, having the main navigation at the top of the page, a logo at the top left of the page, a clickable logo which takes a visitor back to the homepage and links which change colour/appearance when you hover over them. • User-Centricity – the design needs to take into consideration usability and user experience. It should be obvious and self-explanatory. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Good luck.
