Community & Non-Profit
Children’s Ground is an organization focused on systems reform for First Nations communities in Australia. We work with each child and his / her family within a community over the course of a generation to evoke real change. Led by the community themselves, we work across five platform areas: Learning & Wellbeing: delivering early years learning that promotes First Culture and Language, alongside Western learning priorities Family Health & Wellbeing: teaching children cultural health practices alongside health promotion (e.g. handwashing, dental care, nutrition, etc) Economic Development & Wellbeing: providing job opportunities for those who have been long-term unemployed or never employed through a flexible ‘no barriers’ approach towards employment Community Development & Wellbeing: privileging local governance and ensuring intergenerational environments of safety Cultural Development & Wellbeing: celebrating First Culture through spending time on-Country, cultural camps and organization of cultural events Children’s Ground takes a holistic approach to address the deep-rooted inequities facing First Nations community. Our work spans over a 25-year period, during we collect rigorous data to evidence change. Target audience The vast majority of our followers are women, ranging from 25 – 55 years of age. However, we would like to reach an audience ranging from millennials to retirees to corporate entities to philanthropists to schools.
Children's Ground visual style is bold, strong and direct, while also feeling 'personal' and compassionate through use of hand-drawn elements - a hand-made font, textures and striking imagery of children and families. While our new website will be clean, sleek and not overly 'busy' we ideally want to communicate the highly personal nature of the work we do - walking alongside First Nations children and families in intimate, community-driven partnerships. Our logo consists of a painted 'sun-like' graphic stacked on top of the words Children's Ground. We prefer it to be displayed on a white background, with ample space surrounding it. Yellow (R:241 G:198 B:24) is our primary colour. It is bold. It demands attention. It is strong, positive and full of hope. We use yellow across our communications materials to emphasise and illuminate our message. Orange (R:218 G:138 B:32) is our secondary colour. It can be used alongside the yellow or instead of if yellow isn't appropriate thematically or visually. Yellow and orange across our communications materials in conjunction with black and white, as per the logo. While we do have four other colours we use sparingly where necessary, we would prefer if the website design stuck to our primary and secondary colours. The real hero of our visual aesthetic is the suite of dynamic and highly personal imagery we collect in documenting and communicating our work. As our images are our real visual strength in our communications, we need a website layout that features images in a bold, yet clean and simple way.
Home Page, Content Page, Store Page Home Page: Above the fold should feature a large image, which quickly communicates to the visitor the nature of work done by Children's Ground. The content of within the page should also quickly brief what children's ground is about, the work we do and the area we work in. The main CTA for the home page should be a Donate button which is prominent to the visitor to donate to the cause. Content page: These pages will be used to educate the visitor further in a succinct, easy to digest manner on the type of work Children's ground does, the different locations where the works are been done and how visitors can help the cause (Donate, Volunteer, Apply for career). Store Page: The store page lists products that Children's ground sell for charitable causes. The products sold include, shirts, books, cds, posters and gift cards. The old store page (http://www.childrensground.org.au/store) is quite boring (lot of whitespace) and confusing for the visitor. For example it was very hard to distinguish what each product was without reading product description, the Books looked like cd covers. The new page should quickly communcate the differences in the product.
What to avoid
- do not want scrolling rotating homepage banners - do not want infinite/endless scrolls through the pages
- The design of the pages should be responsive between desktop and mobile. - The aim of the website is to quickly communicate to a visitor the nature of Children's grounds work, and help navigate to the different ways they could help the cause (Volunteer, donate, join career etc). The design of the website should also reflect this. - Link to high resolution images > https://wetransfer.com/downloads/94bef12bb0d5dbbf043c2db4c316035b20191002024042/a9a9fa478e0bf00a8f8551b7ba681f4c20191002024042/b87eaa?utm_campaign=WT_email_tracking&utm_content=general&utm_medium=download_button&utm_source=notify_recipient_email - Regarding the length of the home page, The current websites' home page length is a good measure of how long the home page should be. In terms of what to focus on for the home page, the current home page is too wordy and doesn't communicate the nature of our work very well. I would look at https://www.medair.org and https://www.rescue.org/. They have strong visual elements like icons and pictures breaking up the sections and highlights key messages, which captures what the organization does very well.
