Serious Fun: Choro Camp New England

Entertainment & The Arts
Choro Camp New England will be a week-long music camp for adults devoted to the Brazilian musical genre of "choro", also known as "chorinho." It will take place on the Smith College campus in Northampton, MA, a quintessential New England town. This will be our first year.
I want to convey that this event will be both serious and fun: serious about the music, but presented in a welcoming way, with a light touch. The designer will need to either be familiar with choro or willing to devote a little time to listening to it. Generic "music" themes will not work. I can see going in different directions style-wise. This musical tradition of choro dates back to the 19th century, so there is a lot of black and white historical imagery we could use. (Some of which I will include with this brief.) We could go with that to highlight the depth and breadth of this tradition. The trick there is not to make the event seem to stiff, dated, or for men-only. There have also been wonderful, brightly colored illustrations done for choro posters, album covers and events. I'll include a couple examples of those too, just for inspiration.
(Please note, I added to this brief on Dec 6. Those additional remarks begin in the 3rd paragraph below.) I would like designs for a home page and a subpage. The homepage design should include links to the following content areas: Home / Program / Artists / Campus / Stage & Screen / Resources / FAQ / Registration. (I am aware that in the design itself these links will not be active.) The subpage design will be applied to those areas. If it makes a difference at this point, please be aware that we may include dropdown lists from those headings on the homepage. I would also like the site design to include an easy way for people to join our mailing list and links to facebook and instagram. This event has never happened, so we have no imagery from the event itself to use. So the designer will have to be creative in the use of either existing or original artwork / photos. Again, a familiarity with choro will be an enormous help in that regard. Additions to brief on December 6th: The submissions I have received to this point have helped me clarify the different options available for how the home page might be organized and what functions it may serve. Let me spell out the two clearest options below: Option 1: Home Page is Organized According to the Menu Items. Following this option, the topmost panel would include the event logo (which provides visitors the name of the event) as well as the dates and location of the event (June 24-30, 2019 / Smith College / Northampton, MA ) Following that, each item from the menu (Program / Artists / Campus, etc) is given its own section as you scroll down the home page. The section provides a brief intro and a link to the appropriate sub-page. Option 2: Home Page as Intro. According to this option, the homepage includes the menu items, but is itself devoted to three things: >>1 The first visible section should include the logo (which gives visitors the name of the event) and the date and location prominently displayed: June 24-30, 2019 / Smith College / Northampton MA >>2 A "Welcome" area that will provide an overview of what CCNE is all about. This would include a headline and some introductory text, along with an invitation to read more on a sub-page. >>3 An "About Choro" area for people who know little or nothing about the genre. Again, this would include a headline and some introductory text, along with an invitation to read more on a sub-page.
What to avoid
I do not want music to start upon arrival at the website; nor do I want images that scroll automatically. I prefer to be in control of what I see and hear on a website, rather than having those choices made for me. Generally, I have a preference for clean, smoothly functioning design with few bells and whistles.
The address of the website will be chorocamp.com. I have included our logo in several formats. Let me know what else you need. I'll do my best to guide the process.
