I used only a minimal illustration for the main character's face and a pink splash to tie the front and back together. The color and arrangement can be easily changed to create unique yet coordinating covers for the next books in the series.")

As its use would primarily be on merchandise, I kept the logo dimensions fairly square in shape. At small sizes it easily reads as a dragon. Since it was for a more romantic novel series, I made the dragon look fierce and added some whimsy to the text instead.")

One of the stipulations in the design brief was that the title had to be readable at all sizes. Though the typeface is decorative it still reads well even in a thumbnail.
Since the chemical threat is a major plot point, I balanced out the typography with a vector-styled illustration of an open vial. A light yellow background brings to mind the fixtures and furnishings of a past era. The back cover copy is laid out so as to emulate a newspaper or a briefing. Strong black lines create balance, while the eagle seal hints at the involvement of the CIA.")

The mermaid is meant to be a bit androgynous and alien but still retain some elements of ‘human’ beauty. Used bright aquas and navy for a kind of high-science/tech feel. The futuristic typeface was chosen for readability at thumbnail size.")
